The Death (and Rebirth?) of Off Topic (6)

So, as Off Topic gasps its last we are all supposed to turn our attention to the Weblogs. Not that I can see any huge changes yet, but it may bring together two contrasting sections of IC society. I seem to remember Lingus making the journey in the opposite direction and being thrilled to discover Off Topic, I suppose now he will have to return here full time.

I have to say that for me it is going to require a huge change in mindset. I've always seen the blogs as being very personal, when I have posted here it has always been about my personal feelings, things I have done, or my personal opinions. The boards, and particularly the Off Topic board, have seemed a place for much more general discussion and debate, not so closely focussed on my interests.

The effective closure of Off Topic means that those of us who want to continue having debates about non-BDSM issues, or enjoy light hearted threads on a variety of subjects, are going to have to get used to blogging them if we don't want to lose completely a valuable part of the IC experience. Quite how that will be greeted by the regular bloggers who never go anywhere near Off Topic only time will tell.

We will still suffer from the Off Topic problem, of popular and interesting threads rapidly disappearing down the boards until they drop off the bottom in just a couple of days, never to be seen again. That is a great shame, because there have been some great debates on IC that have gone on over several days, and sometimes latecomers can completely change the course of the debate. I can't see much way round it, though, other than by repeatedly starting a new blog and linking back to the old one, which will no doubt drive people crazy in no time.

I know there has been a long thread on this over on Off Topic, but I'm more interested here in looking forward. Any thoughts on how this might work? How do regular bloggers welcome the idea of lots of former Off Topic posters moving in on the weblogs? Is it even possible to recapture any of the good things from the Off Topic board? And can we avoid the bad?

It does feel wrong, doesn't it? Weblogs feel like personal musings, writings, journals. Off-Topic is for fun, frivolity, vanilla distraction. How is it possible to combine the two? It feels very uncomfortable, and it does trivialise weblogging, I think, sadly. Interestingly though, I haven't much visited the weblogs of people that I don't know, and so this morning I've surfed through some. There's some great writing; makes for absorbing reading. And it mostly confirms my fears that off-topic topics are going to trivialise weblogs here. But then, I've taken my own personal bdsm weblog off of IC a long time ago; some of it just feels far too personal to share with absolutely everyone in IC.

I can't see that it's going to make much difference at all. For a long time an awful lot of 'non-blogs' have been posted on Weblogs, e.g. one line links to youtube, stuff about politics, stuff about films & television, birthday greetings, questions inviting discussion (on BDSM and non-BDSM issues), cut & pasted jokes folks have received in email, banter between friends, and, the 'sin of all sins' personal ads!.

I'm not moaning, I haven't always stuck to the Off Topic rule. I guess what I'm saying is that Weblogs has, to a large extent, already become the Off Topic board.

As long as they all read my stuff and say nice things about it, that's fine. Obviously.

I think that the weblogs are a mixed bunch of stuffs anyway so i don't see that the move of OT to here is going to be that different in respect to the content. I don't really go into OT that much as i think it is cack but then there are blogs that get writtent hat i think are cack too, im sure i have written blogs that others think cack also but the option to scroll past is there so its all cool. The only thing that i am concerned about is how fast blogs are going to get lost. It would be nice to know if we are going to be able to scroll back pages on the blogs like you can do on the boards. I dont always log in every day so it would be nice to know that there will be an option to be able to read blogs that have fallen off of the first page when i do log back in.x

Im so fucking fabulous, i piss glitter. :-D
