Ok seriouse musing here, how the hell do masochists put up with pain. Now as i know what i have done to my knee i suppose i should be resting it more to prevent further damadge. Today its been the worst its been in weeks, probably because this week i have been little miss get up and go, and doing way to much. But this evening when i got in at 5 i knew i had over done it way to much this week.
My knee and hip were both throbing at the same time, not somthing i have had happen, and as a result i felt sick to the stoumach from the pain and had a headace. So how oh how do masochists put up with pain?

Indeed, I agree with Ms Whisper.
Although I was taught a really good technique in martial arts of how to transfer pain to another energy. Bit hard to explain on the net though and took me a long time to learn!
Pain still hurts as such, you can still feel it, but in a completely different way. I can't believe I've no control

I heard of a woman who had an operation on her brain (tumour, I think), which resulted in severing the part of it that feels pain from the part which involves emotion. After the op, if she ever felt pain she would laugh, she found it really amusing.
I can understand that up to a point. Pain has a lot of different effects. Remember, for instance, when you started losing your milk teeth. Wasn't it irresistible to waggle to the loose tooth around? Though you didn't want to go too far, it was a bit like scratching an itch. And there have been times for me when pain was funny, in context, but again not a huge amount of it.
I do know somebody who suffered extreme pain at the hands of others, and developed an ability to make herself unconscious when it got too much.
There's something that worries me regarding the lady above who had the operation. I remember watching a documentary years ago about people who had severe epilepsy (think it was), and in an effort to cure it underwent an operation to separate the two halves of their brains. Some of the patients developed strange symptoms after the operation. A patient reported that his left hand would fight with his right hand or try to choke him. (Stuff about this here: http://faculty.ed.umuc.edu/~jmatthew/brain/split...)
The thing is, that the person reporting it was necessarily the half of the brain that can speak, ie the left hemisphere (controls the right hand). So it is possible that once the brain has been split, the two hemispheres become two different minds. Two different people, in effect, living in the same body. A particular sort of conjoined twins, in a way.
So what's all this got to do with the price of whips? Well, the lady who had her brain monkeyed about with would laugh at pain, but perhaps there was another person inside her who suffered from it? In a hell all of their own.
Horrible thought.
I don't think it's likely though, so I hope you all sleep peacefully in your beds tonight...
Ps Apologies to Little Miss Evil for hijacking your thread. Got a bit carried away. |

Well, I'm a masochist with chronis pain. I use meditation. Similar techniques to when in a scene and the head space is wrong. Breathing, distraction, mild dissociation, and a feeling of zen.
Also, just plain putting up with it.
When in the right head space, it's not pain at all though, from a scene, I mean, it's just flying. bara 'adam 'et 'elohim m'apher

I'm in pain sometimes in my hip, from my stupid broken foot?!?
That's not nice pain.
At the same time i'm craving the nice type of pain that comes from a session.
I want to be beaten. Despite already being in pain.
So it's definately a different type of pain.
Take it easy lady! Hope it's feeling better soon. Your so pretty when your on your knees.
Disinfected, eager to please

Ditto the above!- Though not a serious masochist, this question is something I stumbled across when explaining my kink to my friends a while back-
I remember being asked that as I enjoy pain, would I enjoy it if someone punched me in the face!- My response was of course not, that's a different kind of pain...
In general, I'd surmise that BDSM inflicted pain is short, sharp and to the point- Even in scenes where the pain level is gradually increased there's a cut off point when it ends, and any residual pain can be linked to the fun you had that caused it- Compare this to something like toothache, which is non-voluntary, drawn-out and generally subsides over time and hopefully you get the picture! Life is like a game of poker: Sometimes you've just got to make the best of a bad hand.

Yep, very catchy title. Got me to read it
OK, moving past the different kind of pain thing - I found, when I had my 7 month headache, that if I Domme'd my partner at the time my headache would totally go away while I was in Dom-space. I was SO focused on what I was doing the pain just went. So I think it does have A LOT to do with headspace - good pain or bad. And drugs. You know, the prescription kind.
Tis a shame I don't live closer to you, I'd be your subbie any day.
