I was sitting with my latte in the autumn sunshine watching the world go by waiting for my lunch date to arrive. I saw him out of the corner of my eye, he was sat in the corner staring. He reminded me of someone. I knew he was going to speak to me. I am the original nutter magnet. My invisible beacon attracts them to me.
"I like your lipstick" he said. As a chat up line this ranks alongside lovely blouse but it wasn't this that unnerved me. His girlfriend came out and tried to persuade him to go inside. I stared intently in the opposite direction. He told her to go inside and continued to bore a hole in the back of my neck with his eyes. I cursed my lunchdate who finally arrived two long minutes later. The arrival of my companion failed to interrupt the unstinting gaze. He sat back in his seat watching and I remembered who he reminded me of. A psychopath I once worked with. He didn't talk much, he would sit back watching, a half smile on his lips as he observed. When I looked back into those eyes I saw nothing, felt no emotion there. " I like you Crimson" he said. The most chilling words I've ever heard.

Sitting on the bus. Trundling slowly through the traffic. My attention was drawn to a man with an ipod sitting a few seats ahead on the opposite side of the bus. He was making strange grunting sounds. Rocking to the tune that I couldn't hear, each rocking movement accompanied by a grunt. I wondered if the ipod was turned on and whether the music just existed in his mind.I knew not to look at him but got the sinking feeling. It was inevitable that he would talk to me. I stared ahead and said nothing when he jumped up and leaned over me to open the window next to me and several others. Loudly and aggressively. He sat back down and continued his rocking and grunting. He seemed to be engrossed in his grunting. There was a cold draught coming from the window. I shut it.
Suddenly he jumped up and started shouting at me. Something about me coughing and germs and that I should get a cab and shut the window again and raising his voice to a screech when he said the word INFECTION. I think I may have coughed once. I can recognise paranoia when I see it so I did not give in to the temptation to tell him to get a portable plastic bubble to go with his tinfoil hat and continued to stare straight ahead. He went back to rocking and grunting after his outburst. I smiled in his direction as I walked down the stairs coughing loudly.
WHITE
Sitting with the small one in McDonalds. A woman came over to talk to me.
"I had to tell you that your hair is lovely "she said. "Thank you" I replied. "My friend's went white at seventeen" she said. I was a little bemused as my hair is blonde. I did the smiling, nodding thing.
"I really like it" she said." But DO YOU? "she added pointedly. " Do I what?" I wondered. " DO YOU" she repeated. " Do YOU like it though?" " DO YOU LIKE IT!" she shouted spraying saliva in my direction. " DO YOU REALLY LIKE IT!"
" Erm yes" I replied nodding and smiling and rolling my eyes heavenward.
