I've been ill for over a week, all getting better now though, so today was my first day back at work and first day out and about. So, after finishing work I headed out to see my daughter and grandson. He's 15 months old and is running around really steadily on his feet....I haven't seen him in over a week and boy do I miss him!
We were all sitting in the conservatory, and my grandson was rooting through a box that his mom had yet to unpack when he pulls out one of my snake whips (hmmm I had wondered what had happened to that....eyeing daughter suspiciously!), it's only small, about three feet. I took it off him and placed it on the table. He carried on rooting around until he got bored and went for a wander. Next thing I know, he's grabbed the single tail, by the handle I might add, and he threw it.....he actually threw the whip!....No, it didn't crack, but he had a pretty damned fine action going on!! Several more throws (with me gaurding him to make sure he didn't hurt himself) and he was still throwing it well.
Later, I decided to crack the whip, with his mom holding his hand to make sure he stayed out of harm's way. Do you know, he didn't flinch, not once....In fact, the reaction was an open mouthed 'aaaaaaaaaaahhhhh' each time the whip cracked!
So, I've ok'd it with his mom, I'm going to teach him how to throw a whip, I may even tape him doing it. If he enjoys it, as he seems to be right now, I'll help him progress through any competitions that I can.
Right, I'm off to find a child's bullwhip...I know I've seen them for sale....oh and a nice wide brimmed, leather hat....and some goggles....

A little while ago a mate dropped round, a guy I play squash with, whilst I was practicing with the 8' bullwhip, so he had a go. Useless, he took the skin off his own back but just couldn't get it. He's fine with a squash raquet, but totally pants with a single tail.
Shortly after, a very slight 12 yo lass happened by, picked up the whip and cracked it first time. Brilliant!
I think the youngest we have had whip cracking up the Downs is 11, and he's a star! Now go and tell an egg how to suck granny.
