On July 14th 2008 I was stood in my kitchen chatting to my Mum & older sister when I commented that I had been looking at joining the gym. I think they were both surprised as I have always had an irrational fear of the gym. Why?
I don't know why is the honest answer. For years and years the mere thought has made my stomach turn. There have been a couple of times when I have got through the door only to feel my tummy flip and want to leave – and leave I did. I guess I imagined everyone to be fit, buff body building hunks and hunkesses – I did say it was irrational!
The Saturday before the Monday mentioned above, we were at a friend's party when someone whom I won't name here but he knows who he is, commented on the gym. I said he looked like he had lost weight and he said how he stuck on his music and got on with it – the seed was sown.
So back to that Monday...
My decision was made, now which gym? My sister recommended Virgin Active as she felt JJB would not be my cup of tea – funny, JJB was the one that I walked in and out of as quick!
So, off we went to Virgin right there and then. I felt slightly anxious walking through the door but I did it and before I knew it a chap called Brandon was explaining all about the gym and the membership options. I told him about my feeling of dread and he reassured me completely. Brandon showed us around and I agreed to join - £39.95 per month for a year contract – I signed it!
We discussed booking my first session with the PT to go through what I want to do. Every day he mentioned that week I just couldn't do – he offered an appointment at 2000 that night – it was 1940! Off home I raced, gym kit and trainers on and back to the gym for my appointment...
My first session with the Personal Trainer...
To be continued...
