I know nothing about Japan. But, I was fascinated by the possible uses of a system of honorifics similar to that used in Japan, within a D/s context.

Hi,
I can totally understand - I spent 1+1/2 years in Japan around Matsuyama and Hiroshima. I have days when I miss the atmosphere, the food and restaurants and my friends,...

Having practiced karate, aikido and recently a little judo, I suppose I have more than a passing interest in the culture.
I haven't got into shibari yet, though I definitely intend to, just to gain the experience.
The traditional/feudal ethos is of course VERY much in keeping with the Dom/sub dynamic. The tradition of the uchi deshi - martial arts apprentice/servant - is particularly resonant (and not as strictly heterosexual as some people might believe!)
The general attitude of respect for authority, a respect that is earned through experience and self-discipline, is a very attractive concept that Western culture could do with a big dose of. I personally feel very honoured to be in the presence of, say, a 7th-Dan instructor, and I feel very happy to show this respect by addressing him or her as Sensei.
If anyone is interested in the history of sex in Japanese culture, I heartily recommend the book "Pink Samurai" by Nicholas Bornoff. http://RopeTop.com

What with Shibari (traditional japanese bondage) and Hokusai's famous erotic art (Shunga) Japan is one of the few cultures to bring respect and class to bdsm. My own Tied Up and Tranny series are influenced by the Japanese arts.

The more I think about it, the more appropriate these cultural attributes are to BDSM.
The original samurai ethic is all about serving/protecting the public, and the code (budo) enshrines the concept of using martial skill to control/prevent violence. Aikido philosophy is the modern ancestor of this tradition, the art of non-violent self-defence. The spirituality of this speaks to me very profoundly.
I can see clear parallels with D/s relationships, and I think the samurai is an excellent role model for Dominants - strong, resourceful, determined and yet also sensitive, thoughtful and above all protective.
That's what drew me to martial arts in the first place, my strong protective instincts. I'm now enjoying the flipside of it, the nurturing domination of those who place themselves under my training, in my care, my beneficial autocracy. http://RopeTop.com
