the way a woman speaks can be a major turn off / on for me

nothing to do with accents as a strong accent is nice :)

something to do with the way they form the words...

those unable to form words properly and be understood are definately a major turn off

A woman's submission is a gift to be cherished

The incorrect use of "your" instead of "you're" or "you are" really annoys me.

As did a teacher on a news programme telling us how difficult it is to "learn" someone a particular topic. That'll be "teach" them a particular topic then?!

Also, when someone goes into a shop and says "can I get...?" No, you can't help yourself - that's the girl behind the counter's job! It should be "Can I have...?" surely.

Or "Give me..." if your talking to your sub.

You get extra points for irony.

It could be worse - I've recently seen the phrase "Chester draws" several times.

Sounds like a character from The Dandy. Or possibly Viz ;)

Defeat to — it is defeat by BBC sports readers.

Genuine anything — as opposed to being a fake woman/sub etc.

Good sense of humour — if you have one demonstrate it.

Alliteration — done in a non clever way, as most of them are.

Using a comma instead of an apostrophe.

Blaming bad spelling on self diagnosed Dyslexia.

Science, the only religion that works even if you don't believe in it.
Women wanted, preferably with their own Rohypnol.

I understand dyslexia (sort of) because my son is dyslexic but what I can't tolerate is mispronunciation. I hate "should of" - where's the verb?? It's should have! I can't stand haitch - it's aitch!

Couldn't agree more. Although obviously for dyslexics it causes a problem.

Oh the aitch thing, now that really drives me mad!

A few deal breakers:

* Intolerance.

* Violence towards others.

* Chavs, and/or any nasty teenager/youth with no respect for others, who then blames "having nothing to do" to counteract their anti-social behaviour. With special dislike to those who harass elderly people. I find this sickening. The law is an ass.

* Smoking.

* Anyone who spits in the street.

* Heavy drinkers.

As for my pedantic dislikes, many as previous posts:

* Text "speak" unless for shortness in a text message obviously!

* Your vs you're - it's so simple - get it right.

* Incorrect spelling of grammar.

* Bad punctuation, especially the incorrect use of :- to denote a list. Oh, and too many dots in an ellipses.

* Gross overuse of exclamation marks!!!!!!!!!

* People talking about a PIN number, when then mean a PIN.

Re: "pacific", and "specific" - watch some episodes of Kath and Kim, they play on this very well, and "effluent" with "affluent"!

Innit :) [edited predictably for a typo]

This goes along with a pet hate of mine. The "Authentic Style" you see on so many menus. Such as "Authentic Chinese style cuisine". It's either authentic, or in the style of, surely.

I come from a very academic family, speak a bit posh and have a mother who's the Grammar Dragon incarnate....Having said that, when I used to be a teacher of English as a foreign language, part of my training included recognising the massive diversity of accents, grammatical ways and ever-evolving vocabulary. There's no point being overly pedantic about language because the nature of language is that it will constantly mutate and alter as time goes on according to the various cultures that mingle together and influence it. I accept my mother's occasional telling offs for mispelling this and that (I'm on the dyslexic side), but defend my right to use language in an irresponsible manner if wanna...innit....

I must admit mis-pronounced words drive me absolutely mental, and I've found no shortage of them since moving to the UK. (And don't give me that rot about how you invented the language and the rest of the world is therefor wrong lol)

Other big turn offs would be rudeness, people who are unkind and or nasty for no reason other than to be an asshole. People who drop inflammatory statements just to get attention are also high up on the list.
