Just a random thought that came to me after an online thing this weekend...

Does a persons use of language - for example use of terminology and slang - 'give them away' as to whether they are a 'RL' scener or someone who is all talk?

This is aimed at noone in particular... simply out of idle interest...

I don't think language tells you anything really, everyone has their own words for things that interest them in the scene, not everyone has an in depth knowledge of every single thing in the world of BDSM but can probably talk with authority on those subjects which interest the individual

i can be quite easily turned off by someone's use of language. it has nothing to do with terms though, just their turn of prose.

Clem Attlee was the man.

With the massive intrusion of americanisms into our lives over the last 20 years, im not sure one can draw any conclusions from language anymore.

More to the point, i was brought up to guage a persons "position" in society by other indicators including table manners, clean shoes and hands, general decorum and etiquette etc.

Like all these things, its a rough guide and cannot be relied upon 100%

Being Bi means i can double my options. My sister says im just plain greedy.

I know of two Dommes and their subs who use the most vulgar language as a badge of lifestyle. One Domme is a london Uni lecturer and the other is a london lawyer.

Maybe 15 years ago it might have, but most of the online terminolgy has now filtered into RL use as well.

Anyone with a brain is manipulable. Only the truly unimaginative are difficult to control.

Just to clarify... I'm talking about online... yeah when you meet someone in RL there is an entire gamut of things that help you build a picture of a person...

(oh and like your end quote on your posts... I agree with your sister...LOL)

When somebody thinks life is simple black and white with few shades of gray, everything cut a dried and definite, then I judge they've been spending too much time online and not enough real-life ...

The language someone uses can give you insights into the general values and interests they have. I suspect you would need a lot of written and verbal data from the individual first before you start to draw definite conclusions.

Whether you could tell if someone was RL or not is probably more difficult. As mentioned by others, linguistic cross-pollination between RL and online has probably made identifying RL from online very difficult.

Being able to see if someone walks the walk as well as they talk the talk is, I suspect, almost impossible.

Amo, amas, amat...

Yes

It is amazing how many people talk to you online who will claim particular skills, or to be experienced in a particular fetish. Yet even use of the commonest relevant abbreviations or terms confuses them. At that point the cynicism kicks in and they are on their way out of the door.

Ouch IS a safe word
