So are there any BDSM specific signs in BSL then.

Might be useful to learn a few

SM Dykes did a Kinky BSL workshop thing a while ago (with a videocd full of BDSM related signs as part of the workshop at their conference) but from what I understand, because of the regional and subcultural fractures in the deaf community there's not much (yet) that has wide recognition. Although seeing as I'm not well connected with the deaf community in the slightest I could be talking utter rubbish.

Interesting. It really needs a group of Deaf Dom/Sub and then a new vocabulary of BDSM signs will develop.

Can anyone say who SM Dykes is? S/he seems not be be round here in Informed Consent.

Professor_Tim has a Deaf cousin.

We've been known to use BSL (and "rude word" signs we made up to fill the void of no knowledge!) at each other in clubs when double topping, and on trains/tubes/other public places when we want to chat about Sex/BDSM.

Neither of us a proficient at all though... :-(

It is not important to be proficient. What's important is your attitude, patience and willingness to relate to us.

That's reassuring. I was wondering whether a Deaf sub might find it harder to submit to a dom that was a really crap signer.

SM Dykes is a group rather than a person: Sado-masochistic female homosexuals takes too long to type.

If the text search is up and running, stick it in and see what you get - you should be able to track down a couple of people involved. Otherwise, a google search might do the trick. Although probably anything to do with civil engineering should be ignored... :-)

Talking of playing with deaf people, I would say that if you intend to play with a variety of people, you might want to come up with a very restricted set of 'important' signs that can be quickly taught to each new partner. While an extensive SM sign language lexicon is a lovely idea, so was Esperanto. And Esperanto has still not overtaken English as the chosen means of communication between many different nationalities who do not speak each other's languages. Do what you have to do to make things work first - change the world later.

A friend and I have been discussing the state of SM education in this country (i.e., there is very little of it) - and if knowledge of personal safety techniques is a bit iffy, I don't hold out a great deal of hope for disseminating information on sign language. Yet. But you never know. If you come across - or invent - a good set of signals, let me know. I collect things like that.

Really an obvious question given my profile name?

For Deaf Dom/Subs and hearing Dom/Subs, it is vital that communication between parties is clear and understood to endure smooth understanding and interactivity. What language I used!?!

I suspect that it would be a rare case where any of you do approach Deaf Dom/Sub in whatever situations - be it in munches or actual Dom/Sub situations.

Hence my query!

DeafMaster.

Mistressnikki and I use our (extremely rudimentary) knowledge of BSL to talk across sub's backs during co-topping sessions in clubs. Although having to resort to spelling words out C-A-N . B-E . R-A-T-H-E-R . P-A-I-N-F-U-L . . . (which is just *wrong* for Dom/mes!!)

We're not exactly experts yet. In fact, we'd actually like some tips on where to find BSL evening classes to improve somewhat.

But it is great for communication in very noisy clubs, when there is a sub and eight feet of air between you. A very useful skill...

However, as yet, I have not met any deaf BDSM players but I would really welcome including anyone who is. So long as they give us lessons, we'd be very interested in playing. ;-)

Hi i had a Deaf partner for a while and she developed lots of BSL to cover kinky topics. She did the workshop at SMDykes and I am sure if her costs were covered would do it elsewhere. Some of these signs would be useful for hearing people to use in certain kinds of play too.

If enough are interested maybe I can encourage my mate to do another workshop on BSL and kinky signs - perhaps Deafmaster you could do the workshop together as I am sure you have developed lots of relevant BSL too - would be inteerstiung to see how you are using it. As Deafmaster is saying there is no group to come up with collectively accepted BSL, so effectively everything my friend has come up with count as home signs, most of them in ordinary usage already - just adopted.

If a workshop could be done and people could find space to let us do it, who would be interested - there would be little point if only one or two were up for it? I expect we'd need to ask people for a few quid to cover the costs of it.

PS Deafmaster - do you know many other Deaf people interested in BDSM? Maybe it's time to get a DeafMunch going?

And I'll repeat - if you come up with a list of signs, and you want to, forward them to me and I'll stick them on my website, suitably credited. You never know, with a permanent web record it might even catch on. :-)

It would need to go up as film. If that's possible memo me your website and I'll pass it to my mate and I'll see if she'd consider releasing it for this. it's a brilliant idea.

Well, the book says that I can do it, and the technology generally submits if I use a big enough hammer. And Degenerate says she will talk to her friend who does sign language. So there seems to quite a decent chance that video of SM sign language will go online.

Edited to add: in the interests of completeness of information, if I upload video of SM sign language, I would really like a link to vanilla sign language. I could go and look for one myself, but my sign language lessons are fifteen years ago and I'm decidedly rusty. Probably be much easier if someone up to date gives me the address of a good link for people to follow if they want to also be able to say "Hello, my name is...[/b] 'Kneel bitch' may be a classic BDSM greeting, but it is not socially acceptable in all situations. :-)
