Not a bean and only a handful of negative responses.
It seems that you cannot change your career without experience and qualifications. I have more pride than to accept the minimum wage and work at McDonalds.
You may think this is being stuck up or pedantic but I worked hard to gain a fairly decent career in Insurance Underwriting/Broking and it isn't my fault that, because of the internet, price comparision websites and outsourcing of work to India, my career doesn't exist anymore.
I placed a post on here saying I was giving up and I was pleased by the largely positive response but I am so disheartened at the minute, it's very difficult to think that I have any future whatsover.

I don't blame you for not working for McDonalds for minimum wage. Realistically though, if you change career, you may have to start at, or near the bottom and work your way up again. Maybe look for something where some of your skills could be transferable. Best of luck, Gary. Everyone who lives dies, but not everyone who dies has truly lived. |

You may have more luck with a training post - where trained is what you are expected to be on the way out, not on the way in. Two of the trainees I'll have through my department early 2009 are second-careerists: one is ex-army, and the other is ex-library assistant. Previously, I've had an ex-something-in-finance, an ex-veterinary nurse, an ex-secretary and a nun (current, not ex; nunning is a vocation, not a career). So changing career is definitely possible. On the other hand, we just lost a trained member of staff to the police force... On the other hand, you may already have thought of all this...
Good luck. --A lady is never offensive... by accident.-- |

DON'T GIVE UP IS THE IMPORTANT THING. i spent a while unemployed last year because i wasn't going to work for the pittance i was being offered, eventually the right job came along paying sensible money and working for a really nice boss. keep looking, keep trying and as the saying goes "don't let the ba****ds gring you down". |
