Well peeps today the Big Sunflower has cleared the garden fence... how much this will amaze and delight my neighbours (who are living out a cliche of being camp gay air stewards) is as yet unknown...
Anyway Big Sunflower is now a princely height of 4 foot and will be taller than his cane in about 4 inches time. Medium Sunflower is 3 foot tall and I think will be the first to actually flower, he looks like he's seriously thinking about it. Little Sunflower is hanging tough at 20 inches, I was going to repot him this afternoon, he looks a bit cramped, but relised that I'd fogotten to buy compost on my way home. I'm not sure that repotting is advisable after the flower bud has formed. Any advice on this would be appreciated.
There is also a fourth sunflower whose top rotted off about a month ago and who went on to survive and went on to spout a-new from the healthy part of the stem. Fourth sunflower has three shoots the tallest of which is 2 foot 10. I am hoping all three shoots will get flowers.
Big and Medium sunflower in addition to having one large buds have also developed several smaller buds underneath the main one and at the stem-leaf junctions of their top leaves. This is a sunflower phenomenon I was previously unacquainted with but my sister assures me that it's quite normal.
The rest of the garden is doing fine; I had to install some extra canes to support Triffid Tomato's outlying stems. I have given up counting how many trusses are forming on Triffid, given how late it is now in the season I'm not feeling optimistic that all the eventual tomatoes will ripen on the vine... But I suppose I really shouldn't go counting my tomatos before they hatch, or something.
And just so that this blog is slightly kinky then I'm sure you will all be delighted to know that Triffid, all the sunflowers and my aubergine all in varous forms of artistic yet functional bondage involving green twine and bamboo poles. I'm a botanical rope top me ![]()

At what stage do/did they start following the sun round? I used to drive past a particular field of sunflowers in France every day in the morning and then back again at night, and i remember being fascinated that they'd all turned around to follow the sun - well all except one. There was this one sunflower, right on the edge of the field that absolutely refused to follow the sun around, but didn't seem to be suffering as a result. Love these blogs hun, don't stop xx This communication was brought to you from the desk of the Pontiff Elect, the benchmark by which purity, holiness & normality are measured.
Bless you. |
