I did research online on a forum. Although not of a personal nature I conducted it by Private messages giving my ac.uk addy in the pm.
Once it had been completed I posted the results not naming paticipants as well as an abridged conclusion before I handed it in(Trolling for feedback Sometimes it may be necessary to withhold what the survey is about, either because it may effect the results or to see if respondents can figure it out*. I think in this case there chances of it causing a selection bias are indeterminant as it may attract as many more to answer it as it would scare people of. And of course posters can be expected to cotton on and reveil the truth. *They did a survey among 35 postgraduate economics students at Stanford(why is it always Stanford?) which was testing for the "free rider effect" then asked them what the survey was about afterwards. 2 guessed correctly!!! In my group of 12,11 got it.

Why did it only talk about hurting others - and not about wanting to be hurt yourself?

All studies have to say this type of thing, even if it is unlikely...its ethics and all that jazz.

i did it but i thought some of the questions were pretty crap! it could have done with a bit more explaining!as to weather it was asking about normal life or bdsm life. the end questions saying do you enjoy hurting people... well from a bdsm view they just wernt worded right i thought! yeah i like giving some a good whipping but it doesnt mean i enjoy hurting people! i enjoy the power of doing it. anyway done now!

From what you all say (no, I didn't even get as far as looking at the questions), the outcome of this is that the respondent group were abused as children, have some form of mental illness, like to inflict pain on others and are lawbreakers. Can't wait to see the results and the OPs analysis. btw, has anyone managed to get in contact with the OP? I apologise in advance for any unintentional offence I cause. If it's intentional you'll know it.

I've had nightmares getting really straightforward research past ethics committees - I'd really love to know how the OP got this past. Not necessarily a criticism, I'm rather jealous! If this comes to the Journal I'm on the Editorial Board of though - which is not exactly in this area but not too far away - I can safely say that it stands no chance of publication due to the methodolody. Poor supervision I would say if the OP is a PhD student or lower... "Protect her? From whom and from what? He has already given them life: he does not need to harm them further. It is from themselves that they need protection." William Faulkner, Absalom, Absalom!

I was betting a first year undergrad at best. The pure amateurism of this excludes anyone who has any kind of academic rigour. I apologise in advance for any unintentional offence I cause. If it's intentional you'll know it.

Yes I was thinking that. If I e-mailed the chap the best advice i would give him is a change of Supervisor. Ive seen bad ones cost students dearly. Had world war 3 with mine over topics to research.
