When I see people driving around in 4*4 "tanks". Why should I decide to save energy by walking more. When I see there's people heating their private swimming pool, why should I bother with energy saving to help the environment?.
That's the way is it, while there's people with big cars and swimming pools then what you want is a slice of that pie, you want to be as sucessful and as, rich as they are. You want the car too and you want the swimming pool and why shouldn't you have it?.
Thus it is with China and America. Why should china stop comsuming whilst America continues.
There's only one feasible way to save the would and that is to stop aquating success with how rich you are and stop this insane need to have more and consume more.
It's time to look for a greater happiness than "I own". It's time for the politicians to find other ways to make us happy which doesn't include getting more money and more stuff. Edited Thu 31 Jul 08, 11:29 PM by Hollytg

At the risk of upsetting the applecart, many of those big 4x4 tanks you appear to detest are actually far more environmentally friendly than a nice shiny new Prius.
There is a lot more to a "green" car than what comes out the tailpipe. It's easy to tell the difference between right and wrong. What's hard is choosing the wrong that's more right.

Not too sure what you meant by, might be me that hasnt had enough coffee
"Thus it is with China and America. Why should china stop comsuming whilst America continues".
You do realise that china is comsuming so much to supply America and the UK and other countries with all those nice cheap products for us to buy. for example its is cheaper for America to grow, pick and gin cotton and then ship it all to China to be turned into clothes etc and then for it to be shipped back to America then it is for America to produce it themselves. Why cos the consumer loves cheap products. |

Owning some stuff is essential, owning other things does make life better. I do think that the main things that make me happy and fulfilled are the things that I do with my life, not what I own.
Another example of the Pereto Rule, I think that 80% life's pleasures are derived from what I do (Inc relationships and interactions) and possessions accounts for about 20%
Often, when the lottery comes up in conversation, friends say about the cars, houses etc. that they would like. Yes, I would like these too, but the thing that I would most like to buy is my freedom. To not have to work and not have to think about whether to go to that club, visit that place/person, take that holiday, go to that restaurant, because the money would be there. To get up when I want, not because I need to go to work. To eat when I want, not because it is my lunch break. To do what I want with my life.
I hope that this puts it into perspective from my point of view.
