I consider that to be clear incitement to hatred on the grounds of sexual orientation: but probably somewhat short of what would actually be criminal.
But it is a widely held view, especially amongst those who have not yet thrown off the shackles that religion tries to put on their imagination - even if they've actually repudiated religion.
An awful lot of parents are still inculcating those attitudes into their kids - which I consider to be abusive of the trust of children. It's bad if they turn out to have the 'acceptable' orientation that society expects: a disaster if they are gay, lesbian, trans or whatever.
Actual physical abuse, of the kiddie-fiddling kind, can be a terrible thing, I've seen all too closely the trauma it can cause.
But the trauma that a teenager goes through after being indoctrinated that way - then discovering for themselves in the loneliness of the teenage years that they're one of 'the evil others' can be as crippling emotionally and psycologically.

I had never heard of BDSM before (as a rather young child) reading about it in the NOTW. There was one particular "expose" all about "Pro-Dommes" which went into quite some detail about the apparatus they had in their "dungeons" and the sort of services on offer (this was in the days when the reporters simply "made an excuse and left" rather than planting cameras).
I secretly snipped it out and kept it when the papers when out for the bin-men. So if I am ever called to explain how I became quite so "depraved and corrupt" then I can point a finger at the NOTW. It was several years before I could get my hands on anything more depraved than the NOTW.
As for bashing the bishop, would he like to sign a petition requesting that god abolishes hell? - after all, his ultimate superior does seem to condone a certain amount of cruelty by allowing its continued existence, or is the church's "Top Dom" not quite so nice or powerful as the church likes to think?
Oh and I just checked - guess which profession is responsible for more child abuse than any other? I'll give you a clue, it isn't anything to do with newspapers.

Carey is not a liberal, he is from the evangelical wing and always struck me as over promoted. This reaction to the judgement did not really surprise me, except that the double standards were even more pronounced than usual.
You would not get Rowan Williams writing a piece like that in a million years.
