But Carey ... was useless in the job, was not tolerant of homosexuals but as posted above, did all that he could to make life difficult for them and to prevent a consensus accommodation within Anglicanism emerging during his time at Lambeth Palace.

Cinnabar, which posts are you referring to? The wiki quote above, which I've quoted from a previous post, makes it clear that Carey was very tolerant of homosexuals.
|
In that case if Carey is tolerant of gays, why can't he be tolerant towards BDSM?
|
I don't think what he's written is anti-BDSM - it's anti-infidelity, isn't it? The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation - Pierre Trudeau
Doms - women will fancy you if they see you kicking the shit out of a weasel.

sorry for the ignorant amongst us, what does "IMV" mean? I just want to avoid misunderstandings
“You don't eat 'em,” returned Mr. Pumblechook, sighing and nodding his head several times, as if he might have expected that, and as if abstinence from watercresses were consistent with my downfall.

I'm sure it means in my view.

Thanks, that would make sense. I feel a bit silly now! “You don't eat 'em,” returned Mr. Pumblechook, sighing and nodding his head several times, as if he might have expected that, and as if abstinence from watercresses were consistent with my downfall.

I think its like a grown up version of a comic...it can be skimmed through and has bold headlines and pictures to attract attention to certain articles.
Unfortunately there are people who really beleive what is written in these papers....and are under the impression that if the press says it then it must be true. However I have noticed that said papers are actually slagging off the people who tend to read them. ie working class and "underclass"...they enjoy printing articles about "benefit scroungers"...but many of those classed as "benefit scroungers" buy only red top papers.
Without going on a rant about certain things...I think the most helpful thing I can say is that there are many people who are so socialised to accept what they are told is acceptable, that they will reject not what they are directly told to reject, but what is implied and in that nasty and sneaky way certain aspects of the media have...that which makes them feel more normal and accepted and better or at least not as bad as someone else.

I know from my prison contacts that the inmates by and large believe the tripe printed in the Sun, its almost an oracle for them when trying to find out why someone has been sent down.
A lot of lads in their 20's in for sex offences try to brazen it out in the prison population until they are eventually outed which invariably happens.
What really amazed me was one guy we went to see was bemoaning that the Sun had completely "misrepresented" his crimes, and then had to be restrained by the screws before he attcked a "nonce" who crimes had been printed in the same edition!
The nonce he was attacking was actually about to be released by the appeal courts as his "victim" had admitted lying! He was subsequently cleared and released without a blemish on his character.
That simply shows the mentality of the many of the readers. We did point out this fact to the attempted attcker and we got the no smoke without fire response. at that point we gave up. |

After a little consideration, it is my opinion that Lord Carey is an old wanker. It takes a lot of money to look this cheap

I was not quoting from Wiki about Carey but from my recollection of his prelateship. OK he was not rabid about gays but he always maintained the orthodox line and resisted the accommodation with the liberal view of Christianity which Rowan Williams is now trying to make. Maybe it is impossible but he is trying.
Carey is not a liberal, he is from the evangelical wing and always struck me as over promoted. This reaction to the judgement did not really surprise me, except that the double standards were even more pronounced than usual.
You would not get Rowan Williams writing a piece like that in a million years.

For example South African Bishop Desmond Tutu. A very decent and humane man. But I do have to say that the attitude towards sex by most religions is very reactionary.

I imagine that the current archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams too, would just love to turn around to the gay-baiting, woman-hating bigots in his church, and tell them to bugger off back to somewhere their hard-line attitudes will be respected.
Trouble is, if he did, he'd only be left with a minority rump of mostly English and liberal American clergy. I have huge sympathy for his position. It's a bit like Neville Chamberlain, in 1938, having to pretend to appease, because he's not strong enough to defy.
But schism is coming soon, and afterwards there may be some part of the Christian churches we can work with, in the liberal wing. Academy Incorporated: turning fantasy into reality,

I ceased to be surprised or bothered by religious leaders' comments ages ago. Far worse than Carey's remarks, to my mind, were the bilious outpourings of the NoTW's columnist Carole Malone. Amongst the little gems of 'wisdom' on offer in her piece were:
Where I come from—and I'm not just talking location here, but mindset—people who indulge in that kind of deviancy would be written off as 'sick in the head', depraved, morally bankrupt.
And where I come from people who think that kind of sex is 'normal' would be offered psychological counselling on the grounds they're on the rocky road to hell.
And where I come from, people who hold those sorts of beliefs would be written off as bigoted, embittered old trolls. "Morally bankrupt"? "Road to Hell"? Check the mirror, darlin'.
