You know, perhaps it's because I'm old school (or perhaps just because I'm old ;) ) but I read more and more posts on here that give away facts about other kinky peoples lives..you know the ones that state 'oh X does this for a living' or 'Y's name is soandso'..or even responding to someones post/blog using their real name! and it truly horrifies me!

Do people really not think about the stuff that they write? Do they think that IC is only accessible to friendly pervs? Do they think that the people in question won't mind them giving out personal information?

If *you* choose to write your life story (or parts thereof) down on IC, in the public domain, then that is *your* right to do so, and the consequences are your own, but for others to do that? Have 'we' as a community forgotten just how many people have lost their jobs or their famillies because of an interest in this lifestyle? It happens people!! And nearly every day in the UK too!

You know, it doesn't affect me, I'm out at work and with my family and loved ones, and yes, I know how bloody lucky I am....not everyone is in such a fortunate position.

So, can we please think a little before we out someone? Engage brain before typing etc? I'm sure someone, somewhere down the line would be ever so grateful that their secrets remain their own.

I have enough trouble remembering people's names, let alone a real name and a screen name and which to use when! I hide behind 'hun' 'darlin' and 'mate' most of the time...

I agree. I've asked for posts to be removed (by the writer) when they have had what I consider too much personal information in them. The only network comment about me that I didn't approve was quite blatant about what I do to earn a living.

I also see (and have blogged about!) people listing who else they saw at this or that event. It's OK if 'I' write that I was there, but I'm not sure I want to see other people telling the world where I was, or where other people were and even in some cases what they were doing there.

Absolutely! Talk about ways to draw attention to which events reporters should go to! *rolls eyes*

The art of subtlety it seems is lost on the masses ;)

Hmmmmm "old school". You know, I've been on the BDSM scene for 7 years. I still don't know alot of people I know by their real names, people I call mates. So the rules, I stuck to...

Never ask someones real name

Use the name they gave you.

Don't ask personal questions

If people tell you personal stuff keep it to yourself.

When I first started out people had reputations. You were either accepted because you had a good reputation or you were dropped like a hot potato for having a bad one.

There are no absolutes

Yep!! Spot on!

And in regards to reputations - Now some people seem to be so concerned about 'making' a reputation for themselves, they seldom realise that the good ones that mean anything are earnt the long way, over time and with character!

I have always gone on a set of rules like this;

I'm out and I don't mind explaining things to people, but I will never reveal the identies of people in the scene to anyone outside of it... it's against all my privace rules and my Secret Squirel membership rules

And can be undone in a moment is always something to remember - it's one thing to work at earning a good reputation - but it's got to be kept up.

But loved the content of the main blog, and the follow up one. I wonder though how many people will take note and think about it's contents. (Skeptic? me? never...) :)

my stories at http://members.tripod.com/~oscagne (new story February 2007) whatever i say is my opinion, and mine alone.
