Well for those of you who know me as a republican, activist antiestablishment sort of bloke. I have a shock for you.
I have passed my first interview with the T.A. intelligence corps!
Now the next thing those of you that know me will say run your arse round the block fat lad and that is a fair statement too!
So my reasoning is its about time I gave something back to my nation, I don't actually agree with the reasons for military campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, but lets face it we are stuck there for the duration of this conflict, I cannot stand by watching young people go into an area where they may be attacked or go into battle for that matter and getting killed and not think that I cannot do my best to support them in thier combat role!
I know I have strong political opinions, and I hold my right to express these very close to my heart! I equally teasure your right to call me a sanctimonious cunt so long as you can justify your opinion! (but at the end of the day I respect your right to your opinion) I would actually take a bullet for your right to call me a cunt believe me or not?
Now since members of my family fought in the (Dublin) 1915 easter rising, a direct and open battle against the British army and some of my ancestors fell in this action, there has always been a stigma in taking the Queen's schilling or wearing the red coat of the british army!
Now considering this action was 93 years ago now and I know my own mind I have decided to join up!
Now I will never truly agree with the Queen's right to be head of state, but then I am stuck with her through the will of our Parliment, and since I love my Country I can reconcile myself with this!
So I now nail my colours to the mast I am proud to be British and I will be proud if asked to represent and fight for my nation or assist my nation in anyway needed!
Note all this does not effect my point of view and opposition to the CJIA or my wish for us to withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan, but I can't stand by any longer and not do my duty by my country!
Regards from a Libertarian, Roman Catholic!

Hey there Gary, this really is an admirable blog. You've obviously thought hard about this and have come to terms with the reasoning of your decisions.
We both know that I don't share all of the same views as you, but what I have always admired in you, is your passion for what you believe in. You are far more knowledgeable than I in terms of politics and due to your deeper understanding, your views and ethics are based on this. You're one of them there damned thinkers!
This may come as a shock to civvies, but when the die is rolled and a person's active military service is called on, it is NOT the ol' cliché of 'Dying for Queen and country' that is at the fore of their mind. I'm not talking for everyone, just the many, many elite servicemen that I fought with and then went on to train. Don't get me wrong, active servicemen aren't unthinking violent machines who are only in it for the fights, shits and giggles - every last one of them was really fucking proud to be British and fighting alongside their 'brethren'. That's what it is about, you see...being loyal to the man/woman stood either side of you. Gary, *we* are not the politicians or policy makers. *We* are not the ones who make the big decisions. *We* are not the ones who lead our country. *WE* are the men and women of integrity who go to do as we are told and when we get there, do it as well as *we* can. At the end of the day, it is not an 'academic' question that you have to ask yourself, it is your 'heart' that you have to ask. I genuinely believe that when it comes to military service, it is either a part of who you are or not. Simple as that. I admire the words that you've written and I (as a citizen and ex Bootneck) would like to thank you for wanting to take this step for the reasons you have mentioned.
So in summary...
Fucking dig out. If you want to be a STAB Pongo and more to the point, Green Slime, then fair play. It's hoofing that you want to do this and it means that you can run ashore on an animal run, waste your beer tokens, get minging, trap a NAAFI gronk and swamp her pit whilst earning your brown wings.
Now come on fat lad...do some phys! "I'm just a bloody normal bloke. A normal bloke who likes a bit of torture" Mark Brandon 'Chopper' Read.

However may I remind you that I am a card carrying Pervert and got my brown wings 17 years ago! All the Geordies went to Rome just to see the Pope and this is what he said! Who's that team We call the Boro Who's that team we all adore and they play in red and white and they're fucking dynamite and we'll support the Boro evermore!
