Petrols on the up again (sigh) (31)

Well the cost of petrol has gone up 2p per litre at my local Tesco's reaching £1.15.9 per litre. Yes folks that is £5.27 a gallon (for those of us old enough to remember the gallon).

Yes folks that is an increase of nearly 10p a gallon in a week. What's more that is not for the Gucci (turns your car into a Ferrari, and lets you drive like Michael Schumaker) super unleaded, thats for bog standard unleaded, the cheapest they do at the pumps.

I down graded my car from a 2.9 litre, 200bhp 160mph saloon to a mere 1.6 litre, and still the costs of running your own transport escalate.

I used to be able to fill my tank for less than £60, now it takes considerably more money, yet obviously not more fuel. When will this madness end?

Clarckson and co on Top Gear may love playing around in supercars, I know I used to, but the cost of fuel, maintenence et al, has reduced me to a family sized hatchback. What next...............a Smart Car? Hopefully not.

I live in the countryside, have a 27 mile journey to work, cannot earn the same money locally, so like a lot of us are trapped, having to pay the increasing costs of transportation.

And before anyone suggests it, buses are a rarity here, trains non existant, and with the weather warnings we are having a motorcyle/scooter is not an option.

I think I will go back to my coffee, remembering the time when petrol used to be 76p a gallon, when I was 17. A time when if a car had an 8.2 litre engine, you didn't need a mortgage to fill it up, a time when we could make choices, and not be forced off the road, or into smaller and smaller boxes, just so we can get to work.

I heard someone say they expect petrol to rise to as much as 1.50 by the middle of the summer and then by christmas to 2 quid a litre.. =-o..

Ofcourse this has a knock on effect on EVERYTHING else and that all goes up in price to..

I did a blog the other week at how tescos extra value beens were now 20p a can.. used to be 9p .. so if you were particularly skint you could live off them for a few days lol..

Even bread is nearly 1.50 a loaf.. the basic food items..

Be ok if our income was adjusted to reflect the rise, but its not...

I have heard more than once the £1.50 a litre is on its way, and it did that when we used to buy fuel by the gallon too, once it broke the magic £1.00 a gallon just rocketed. Yes it is having a knock on effect.

Working in the public sector I got a 2.5% pay rise, yet the cost of living is going through the roof.

How in God's name the government can stay inflation is only at 4-5% is beyond me.

I dont profess to knowing much about nor understanding inflation and how its worked out etc.. but I lived through a recession in the 90's. We were one of those who ended up with negative equity on our house and one of those who lost it through repossesion.. So with hindsight I can see something very similar happening again..

Its already began to happen.. House prices have rocketed that much its become stupid money.

Is it just a natural turnover and balance of our money systems which will happen from time to time.. who knows, like I said, dont profess to understand it.. But have lived it..

I never remember petrol being that expensive when i was 17!! But that was a long time ago.

People worry too much about how much further petrol is going to go up and car tax as well. But it affects all in every other way....transport goes up and therefore everything we buy goes up reducing our spending power.

Gordon Brown for all his b......t speeches will be in for a shock if he carries on the way he is going. Folk aren't that stupid to allow this continual tax rise go unabated. Cant physically afford it.

Remember the poll tax and Margaret Thatcher?? She thought she was unstopable and who thought Scotland would rebel that much...good on em.

I lot of people cant work out though simple maths. If say all fuel tax +vat etc was 70% and a litre cost £1 that means porky out of touch Brown gets 70p a litre for nothing. If petrol goes up to £2, then porky without doing anything gets £1.40 per litre.

Porky earns more per litre in tax alone than the fuel Shieks who dig the stuff upo in the first place!!!!

How kind of him then to postpone raising tax another 2p a litre till October. Stop blaming the price of oil...its the tax that makes it so expensive so vote out of power those who continually raise fuel duty.

People power works...vote labour out and in with proper tax reforms.

How about 17.5% vat a litre and that's it???

I'm surprise Porky hasn't added pollution tax to petrol...another stealth tax idea!...Shhhhhh:)

The wealthy though love the idea because us poorer sorts will do less miles, free more roads and therfore giving the rich more space. They would be happy to see £10 a gallon and £1000 car tax - pocket change to them.

Porky as you call him is raking it in on fuel left right and centre, the price of petrol/deisel is made up of the production costs, retaller profit (which isn't much) excise duty (tax) then VAT on the hole lot, yes we pay tax on the tax, which probably equates to 80p per litre at current rates, give or take the odd few pence. IE £3.63 per gallon goes to Porky. Or in the case of an average car, everytime you fill up £48.00 approximately goes to the government. The actual cost of the fuel being £12.00 or so.

Ok maybe the percentages are not quite right, its been a while since seeing the actual figures, but the general idea is the same.

Something needs to change.

Ok I am not one of the countries top earners, but make a decent living, wages wise. Yes there are people a lot worse off than myself. But I cannot afford for things to go up much more, without a decent pay rise.

I fear it will matter not as to the colour of the party in power, this rise is hear to stay.

It isnt. Its a lie. One of the biggest ones they palm us off with, actually. If fuel has gone up by at least 25% in the last 18 months, and food has gone up by at least 10%, then its pretty obvious the figures are a blatant lie to placate the masses.

Whilst I'm an avid petrolhead myself, and I equally have huge concerns about increasingly clumsy invasive legislation, which will not only affect minorities such as ourselves, but ultimately the liberty of our society as a whole, the prime issue seems to be that we will hardly be able to afford to LIVE if "real" inflation, and multi-layer taxation (bear in mind the fuel to deliver your shopping is taxed, and the guy that drives the truck is taxed, and the food is taxed, and the shop that sells it is TAXED (FFS!)) continues at this rate!

I suggest we need to do a whole lot more than nurse our coffee and sigh a little. But such posts do also serve to focus attention.

I'm not suggesting that we all pour out into the streets waving placards, and we ought to remember that we're a damn sight better off than those for whom for instance the only thing they can afford is a bowlful of rice, which has DOUBLED in price, but we do need to keep these concerns at the forefront of public opinion, and at very least make our concerns known to those is the halls of power...
