Yesterday I went for an eye examination to see if I am suitable for Laser Eye Surgery and yes I am suitable. I am probably going to go ahead with this treatment and would like to know if there is anyone on this site who has had Laser Eye Surgery.

I have been given a detailed information pack describing what the treatment is and how it works and all the possible problems and side effects of after treatment. But I would like to hear from anyone on this site who has had this treatment and to know if you had any pain or discomfort after Surgery and if so what were your symptoms and how long did these last.

Thank you.

Amazing. Never regretted it for a second - vision from -10 (that's very short-sighted) to perfect in half an hour, and less discomfort than having a filling. 8 years ago, and it's still perfect. Go for it.

Yes, Ive had it done!

5 mins of feeling very nervous - but wondered why afterwards.

No problems, no pain - the worse thing for me was that I could not wear mascara for two weeks after ! Arghh !!

A little dryness but drops were given automatically and the plastic pirate eyepatch I had to sleep with were passion killers :-) but I'd recommend it to anyone that is eligible.

I went to Ultralase in Chelmsford, not the cheapest but for me the best.

I was in Debenhams 40 mins after my op and I could see bargains at 200 metres !

Best of luck

Same goes for me - I always say I'd rather have it done again than have another root canal.

People usually fail to mention the discomfort/light sensitivity/insane stinging/watering that slowly comes on about an hour after the procedure, but this lasts for a matter of hours - it's best to get a late-ish appointment, so you can at least sleep through it.

Waking up with perfect vision is one of those memories that'll stay with you forever.

But did you still reach for your glasses? And did you spend the next week or so trying to push glasses up your nose that weren't there?

I've been thinking about it, but don't really have the pennies and I think I kind of look good in glasses.

I blame sexy ladies, they have a habit of making things harder.

Continuous wear contact lenses are a nice compromise - you get that "waking up with perfect vision" thing but without the "clamping your eyelids open and prising vast quantities of dosh out of your wallet" thing.

My Master had it done and though he does not regret it he did suffer incredible pain after it was done. I think that he was one of the minority that does have that degree of discomfort though.

I did for a while, but it soon wore off. I later learned that I unconsciously poke myself in the eye, which is fine if you're wearing contacts, but not when you've just had laser surgery.

I never did that one again.

After all...speccy blokes are hot, remember? :-D

Don't want to put you of at all, just be careful, we looked into this for our eldest son, he needed 20/20 vision to become a helicopter pilot, and has worn glasses all his life, we were told he needs to find another career choice because even with laser treatment, he would not be able to become a pilot even though he was good enough, but while doing our research, we came up with a few facts, before I list them for you, remember its your choice, all I am doing is saying be bloody careful before you go ahead with this, and find out all you can first. And make sure they have some sort of insurance should things go pear shaped. [I am not sure if they do or not to be honest]

These were all against eldest getting this done, all the people I have spoken to who were successful with laser surgery, all said it was the best thing they could have had done and they wished they had had it done earlier. I am sorry I cannot give you percentages for and against, I am sure you will do what's right for you at the end of the day. And please keep in mind many people are all positive about the outcomes. So I am not putting you of at all honestly.

A couple of people I spoke to said that before they had surgery, they were still able to put make up on [I also heard a lady say this on the radio funnily enough] and just wore glasses now and again, they just wanted surgery so they did not have to wear glasses at all again, after surgery, they could not see anymore to put make up on, and had to stop wearing make up altogether. And had to wear glasses all the time from then on.

Someone else I spoke to said to me that their eyes were worse after than before, before they only needed them for reading, after they had to wear them all the time.

And lastly but not least, I spoke to a lady who's uncle run a laser eye clinic someplace, and he said to her [who repeated it to me] why do you think that many people who run these clinic's and do laser surgery, all wear glasses themselves?

It's up to you at the end of the day, but I would make sure no one in my family ever goes near them. Eyes are the most precious things we can have, I wish you luck with this one, and will say if you go through with it, let us know how it went. And once more, this was not to put you off at all, it was just to say look at the pro's and con's first, many here say it went well for them, so maybe take no notice of me.

Spoke to the optometrist recently about this and he had some interesting views on the matter. As we age we run an increased chance that we will develop the need for glasses, even if we have perfect eye sight. Getting this surgery done in your 40's may only give you 5-10 years before you need to have glasses again. Even though they can correct the problem now, they can not slow the natural deterioration of the eyes. His advise was to save the money. So ones advise is to shop around and get a second opinion.

Auntie always told me "tis better to be an old man's darling, than a young man's slave". Well, tried both. She was wrong.
