Not satisfied with the UK and undermining smaller businesses in addition to the land bank they have Tesco's now are trying to stifle the media.

It was reported in the Guardian how Tesco were selling their properties and leasing them back. The holding company for the properties are based in a British Tax Haven in the Caribbean. This arrangement means that Tesco shifted £1 billion pounds of profit to the off shore account that the UK government can't tax!

Tesco are suing The Guardian and two Thai journalists for $33 million. A punitive action to deter news reporting of corporate activity.

I have not set foot in a Tesco store since 1994,when they stitched me up royally on a proposed business deal.

Nothing would make me change my policy. They are not a nice firm to deal with.

Age is just a number :), In my case a high one :(

They sell anything to anybody, anything for a buck. I don't even want their cheap petrol, will only stop when any competition is out of business, and then just watch the prices rise. Nasty company.

Tesco is seen as the behemoth of the high street. Commentators, rivals and even some consumers love to rail against the retailer's growing power. But I'm not sure Tesco is really such a bad deal for consumers. Do we really want to go back to the days when shops shut right on 5pm, ranges were narrow and a shopper had to travel far and wide to buy exotic fruit or veg.

The big four have brought a far wider range of goods on offer to many corners of Britain. Also food safety standards have improved beyond recognition.

Yes, I think the power of the supermarkets should be monitored and curbed if need be. But let's not demonise a business for being so successful and giving many people what they want.

Its all very well giving the consumer what they want but they are or were a grocery store. Their planning permissions should have made them a grocery only business then we wouldn't have then supermarkets monopolizing the high streets and putting other independents out of business.

Their tax arrangements are such that they are making egregious sums of money and paying a small percentage of tax to what they should be due to their ability to pay for the expertise and take advantage of the loopholes that you and I and many others have no hope of getting close to.

I can remember when many shops were open late and were convenience store. But now the supermarkets are buying space in the city centres. Whereas people would say how expensive the corner shop was but so to are these inner city shops with differential pricing usually 10 to 20% over the usual store prices.

They are far too strong to roll back time and bring them down and I wouldn't want to. But I do want to see them pay the real tax bill they should be paying and not to force independents out of any and all of the markets that the supermarkets what to grab for themselves.

I said this 20 or more years ago that when they have taken over the high streets and only competition is to each other prices will rise and nothing will be in their way to stop them.

Its not all Tescos though. Out of town outlets of shops are taking away from the high street... including next, boots, argos and other well known names...

and we as consumers are appreciative of the fact that you can visit these stores, and park close by to them, and not have to traipse around all of the little shops looking for what you want.. and get everything you want in the same area.

havins said that ....often the little shops will charge a bit more but they are offering a service and knowledge surrounding their product, wheras the bigger stores arent, but are usually cheaper, and you can usually find the info you need on the internet before you buy a product these days.

so it is swings and roundabouts...

as for the tax dodge... they have found a loophole... would you want it broadcast!
