I used to get all sorts of name calling at school, it didn't bother me much. My mum just used to say they were only jealous. (Probably to back up her "its not ginger its strawberry blonde" theory) The best name i was called was "Duracell" because i wore a lot of black clothing as a teenager, this was stepped up to "Dave Mustaine" after I had my hair permed once. I remember little old ladies used to come up to me in the street and pat my hair and compliment me on it, i just thought that was weird. My mum also made me promise never to dye my hair (EVER!) and I never have. The highest percentage of natural redheads in the world is in Scotland (13%), followed closely by Ireland with 10%. In the US, about 2% of the population are natural redheads. Americans spend 40 million USD per year dying their hair red! Recent Scientiffic Theory suggests that the "Classic" Red-head colouration, Ginger/Red Hair, Green Eyes, Very Pale-Freckled Skin, that just WON'T tan is linked to a gene called MC1R-Varient. It is now believed to be the result of inter-breeding between the Homo-sapien- moving up from Africa at the end of the last ice age- and the Native European Neanderthals. I.E. it is Neanderthal gene. Which is why people with that gene just burn in the sun, coz their colouration was evolved for an ice age enviroment. The reason White People are white is to allow the skin to still produce vitemin D in comparatively weak European, (As opposed to Africn) sunlight.This was obviously even more nescessary in the ice age. | |

I started henna-ing my strawberry blonde hair when I was 15 and have never looked back. Never been called 'ginger' in my life ... I am a redhead. I used to describe it as 'the colour of irn bru', but have gone (dis)gracefully darker red with age (on my head at least!), but still RED and the brighter the better. I have been spotted and recognised by someone over a mile away whilst parking at Glasgow Airport, or maybe I was just being stalked ... I think that eye colour has a lot to do with it too ... red hair and brown or green eyes ... wonderful, and who needs a tan anyway, creamy white skin with a faint sprinkling of freckles is so much more beautiful and natural.
