I've ranted about a number of things over the years, both here and on other blogs I've written. Every so often I come back to discrimination when I see it going on yet again.

We still have discriminatory munches, I've ranted against them, but they seem to be accepted in a way that a whites only munch wouldn't be, even though there is no difference between discriminating against someone based on the colour of their skin and discriminating against someone on the basis of their age. It is still discrimination!

Now we have a thread about discrimination on the basis of gender and people seem to think it is okay http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/boards/ukevents... it is a sad state of affairs when people who will tolerate discrimination will not tolerate those who are against it.

But surely munches, by their nature, are discriminatory?

I really don't get what peoples issue with age related munches are. I know when I first came on the scene when I was 18 I felt more comfortable around people my own age, now I don't go to any U35 munches generally as im quite comfortable elsewhere now Ive made friends.

Theres nowt stopping people starting up over 35 munches and I don't believe there would be any of us younger ones complaining about that.

Does that mean I have to invite people I don't like over to my parties? I can't be discriminatory against those people who are (by nature I assume) stupid, arrogant, borish, or narrow-minded? Or maybe you plan on repealing the anti-smoking law?

The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.

@ mmutie, I thought that munches were supposed to be welcoming to all.

@ Alley Cat, "I really don't get what peoples issue with age related munches are." My issue is that they discriminate, so why would I want to start an over 35's munch and practice the same discrimination?

@ Skyfox are you talking about a private party, BDSM/fetish event or munch? I'm talking about BDSM/fetish events and munches, who you invite to private parties is no ones business but your own.

So, presumably those who think BDSM is immoral would be welcome?

I think that Munches would be better to be welcoming to all. I can see the other side of the argument though; it is choice and freedom, people can set up a Munch for a certain subsection of the scene if they wish. I just can't see much point in dividing what is already in some ways a sub culture into smaller divisions. I can't see the point in excluding people, but I can't say that this issue makes my blood boil or really makes me angry.

The clubs that make it difficult for single males to enter or charge them more than single females; I have much stronger views about them. I think that this is totally out of order. I can understand a couple being charged less than two singles and cannot see anything wrong in that. Buy one, get one cheaper is fine. Also, group discounts. However, when single males are not allowed, are only allowed in restricted numbers or are charged a higher price is blatant sexism. I'm no expert on the law, but I would have thought this would be illegal. IMHO, if the clubs don't start to address this issue themselves, I think that the law should. However, none of us really wants their attention drawn to our scene.

I can't quite get my head around the fact that i can 'own' a 'slave'.... yet people will complain about discrimination being an issue when they do not fit the criteria for a munch or such like...

Since when as it all been about equality?

Why not? Are you afraid that they will change your mind about BDSM?

If they came to a munch to disrupt it and be overtly offensive then they wouldn't be welcome, if they came along and wanted to know more then what is the problem?

SNIP

The other side of the argument is discriminatory, in exactly the same way a munch catering purely for white people would be.

How many people would support a whites only munch?

I'm not sure what there is to get your head around.

You don't 'own' a slave, you can't own another person.

Remember Rosa Parks? She was black and sat on a bus seat she didn't fit the criteria for, that was discrimination.

Telling someone that they can't go to pub and talk to other people, because they are too old, is no different to the bus driver James Blake telling Rosa parks to give up her seat for a white person.

It is discriminatory and it is wrong.
