It does look like an interesting and pretty easy project, I'd like to make one.

As it's likely to be used on me a lot more than it would be used by me, strangely enough, I don't think I will.

Inspired by MarcusStrapp's recipe, I've described making a "flyprod", which uses mains flex connectors and looks more like a cattle prod with a shaft!

The best thing about this little toy is the evil glint in a Dom's eyes as he stings me ;)

Could you substitute the capacitor for one that would hold a smaller charge to make it safer perhaps?

Yes you can change the capacitor to a lower value one, but there is a complication: you might not feel it. The best device would have a very low capacitance (less than 1 nF) and a high voltage (greater than 3000 V). This gives an energy of 0.5*(3000^2)*1e-09=4.5 mJ, which is safe and also noticeable. A static shock is about 300 pF (supposed capacitance of a human) and a voltage of around 6000-50000 V.

The idea device would be a Van de Graaff generator, as they really sting and are believed to be quite safe. Here's an interesting read btw: http://www.sserc.org.uk/public/Safety_Messages/s...

The principle stun guns work on is quite precise: contrary to popular belief the sole aim isn't actually pain, it's that the (very) high voltage converts the sugar in your blood stream to lactic acid so that your muscles cannot move.

While you're right that the pain isn't the immobilizing force they don't work like that at all.

If that is what you believe then you may want to give references.

It *looks* like a modified electric fly swatter but I've heard that it feels completely different (no muscle contraction or burning). It sparks more (the fly swatters I've seen don't spark when touched on skin, only when touched on metal).

Funnily enough I've been meaning to post all week but not got around to it.

Last Sunday we were in the garden centre and susie spotted a battery powered flyswatter, which we bought.

It looks like a kids plastic tennis racquet but has rows of metal rods across it instead of string or plastic mesh.

It is powered by 2 AA batteries and it made a lovely spark and it certainly made her jump when I touched her bum with it! :-D.

It isn't robust enough to use seriously as it is, but I'm sure it is pervertable!

The link you posted definitely sounds as though it is similar, but the best thing is it only cost £5.99!

Seen the same thing in a pound shop - either "poundworld" or "everythings a pound" - cant remember which

Well your references hardly stand up to much scrutiny. A patent application and a article of dubious provenance from the internet. Hardly peer reviewed research. Sadly pubmed yielded no articles about their function, merely about their safety.

Turning to the manufacturer's: Taser make no claims about lactic acid build up. Citing interruptions of neuro-muscular signalling as the main cause of incapacitation. But they do mention that the strike additionally causes people's muscles to contract rendering them immobile. Wikipedia and howstuffworks also only talks about interruptions in neuro-muscular signalling

There are other sites I found that repeat this notion of rapid muscle contractions leading to muscle exhaustion. But given the lack of consensus I'm going to remain sceptical.

I'll give you these things to think about though. Lactic acid build up in the blood is irrelevant to what's happening in your muscles. So converting all the sugar in your blood to lactic acid is kind of meaningless. And how would that work? How would and electrical current convert some sugar in solution to lactic acid? Also it's not what any of the sites I or you have quoted suggests happens.

Additionally, lactic acid build isn't causes the pain in your muscle (see wikipedia article below for a good summary). It's the associated acidosis which arises from a separate reaction. Also Watch the video on the howstuffworks page and you'll see that the attacker is dropped inside of a second, long before your muscles could have burnt all of their fuel. Sure if you hold the charge on for 5 seconds or more then the muscles will start to cramp up from the acidosis but it's not that the immobilises the person.
