It does look like an interesting and pretty easy project, I'd like to make one. As it's likely to be used on me a lot more than it would be used by me, strangely enough, I don't think I will.

Inspired by MarcusStrapp's recipe, I've described making a "flyprod", which uses mains flex connectors and looks more like a cattle prod with a shaft! Regards, Tanos

The best thing about this little toy is the evil glint in a Dom's eyes as he stings me

Yes you can change the capacitor to a lower value one, but there is a complication: you might not feel it. The best device would have a very low capacitance (less than 1 nF) and a high voltage (greater than 3000 V). This gives an energy of 0.5*(3000^2)*1e-09=4.5 mJ, which is safe and also noticeable. A static shock is about 300 pF (supposed capacitance of a human) and a voltage of around 6000-50000 V. The idea device would be a Van de Graaff generator, as they really sting and are believed to be quite safe. Here's an interesting read btw: http://www.sserc.org.uk/public/Safety_Messages/s...

While you're right that the pain isn't the immobilizing force they don't work like that at all. --- Ha!

Turning to the manufacturer's: Taser make no claims about lactic acid build up. Citing interruptions of neuro-muscular signalling as the main cause of incapacitation. But they do mention that the strike additionally causes people's muscles to contract rendering them immobile. Wikipedia and howstuffworks also only talks about interruptions in neuro-muscular signalling http://www.taser.co.uk/index.php?zone=public&pag... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroshock_weapon http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/gadgets/oth... There are other sites I found that repeat this notion of rapid muscle contractions leading to muscle exhaustion. But given the lack of consensus I'm going to remain sceptical. I'll give you these things to think about though. Lactic acid build up in the blood is irrelevant to what's happening in your muscles. So converting all the sugar in your blood to lactic acid is kind of meaningless. And how would that work? How would and electrical current convert some sugar in solution to lactic acid? Also it's not what any of the sites I or you have quoted suggests happens. Additionally, lactic acid build isn't causes the pain in your muscle (see wikipedia article below for a good summary). It's the associated acidosis which arises from a separate reaction. Also Watch the video on the howstuffworks page and you'll see that the attacker is dropped inside of a second, long before your muscles could have burnt all of their fuel. Sure if you hold the charge on for 5 seconds or more then the muscles will start to cramp up from the acidosis but it's not that the immobilises the person. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactic_acid --- Ha!
