I bought one of those fly swatters recently and was gutted to find that it had a safety mesh around the hurty mesh. Time to get DIY'ing it me thinks.

these ones have no guard, bit more expensive though

That's interesting. I really don't believe that the TAZapper is a fly swatter: it may well be a modified one though (say, a small discharge capacitor).

But has anybody else noticed that the handle of the Executioner: http://images.glebecomputers.co.uk/images/ebay/e...

is almost identical to the handle of the TAZapper: http://toystoysonline.com/images/electric/taz-ba...

The button even looks the same.

The Executioner works at 3000V.

I have an Executioner, and it has more punch then the red or yellow electro bats my 2 subs have :-D

Well you react well to it locked, maybe I should bring it along on Friday, and let all the ladies have a ZAP of you ;) Hehe

Did you modify it yourself? Any chance of some guidance as to how?

I have a an electric fly swat but find it a bit clunky, so I'd like to try making a zapper. I suspect a few other folks may too, when you consider how cheap you can get fly swats on ebay.

MarcusStrapp's recipe looks very good :)

TAZapper

Has anybody here heard of this (the tazapper)? It's been features on many popular websites on kink.com for years. http://www.toystoysonline.com/electric.htm

I have a couple of questions: firstly, how does such a device work? It *looks* like a modified electric fly swatter but I've heard that it feels completely different (no muscle contraction or burning). It sparks more (the fly swatters I've seen don't spark when touched on skin, only when touched on metal). I assume that it uses the same principle as the fly zappers - charge a capacitor to high voltage, and discharge into something. I would guess that the capacitor in the TAZapper is much smaller (i.e. safer), but holds a higher voltage (and hence sparks more) than the fly zappers.

My second question: is it legal here?

It looks suspiciously like a gas lighter to me.

Gas lighters are usually piezo-electric... this thing is battery powered. Also you should watch the demo video (it's on the product page).

I've seen them kill flies and spiders, are they safe on people ?

No. Well they might be, but if you do the maths on a simple fly zapper: Energy = 0.5 * C * V^2 = 0.5 * 330E-09 * 2250000 = 0.371 J = 371 mJ

To put that in perspective, you can start to feel capacitor discharges at about 1mJ. Most people would say 10mJ is slightly unpleasant, and everyone finds 100mJ distinctly unpleasent. Above 100mJ causes involuntary muscle movement. A tazer is about 500mJ.

Ohms law (V=IR) still applies to capacitors, so there is an exceptionally high current at the beginning of the discharge: I = V/R = 1500/2000 = 750 mA (assuming very low skin resistance) the only reason this current doesn't kill is that the total shock lasts for less than 0.7ms ... my point being that it is too close for comfort.

Another fact you might find interesting... the BSI place a limit of 45 microcoulombs of electric charge on most devices. Charge=Capacitance*Voltage, so Charge = 330E-09 * 1500 = 495 microcoulombs! more than 10 times what's considered safe.

Of course, this all depends on the capacitor at the end of the fly swatter, but they are not made for what you are using them for, and are not consistently manufactured.

Could you substitute the capacitor for one that would hold a smaller charge to make it safer perhaps?

Thanks! I read this a couple of hours ago and immediatelly set to work with a swiss knife and some cellotape. The finished piece is really effective; this was a very satisfying little project, and I am thoroughly looking forward to try it on some bottom's bottom. Unfortunately there's no one around at 4:15 in the morning to try it out on.
