I emailed the folks who run the site a few months ago to ask if they exported these and they said they didnt. I wasnt sure if that was because it is was illegal to own one here or whether they just didnt export in general.

Well the UK law is extremely vague (as per bloody usual) about stun guns. As far as I can see, they never actually define the term "Stun Gun" other than saying it's an "electronic stunning device".
The principle stun guns work on is quite precise: contrary to popular belief the sole aim isn't actually pain, it's that the (very) high voltage converts the sugar in your blood stream to lactic acid so that your muscles cannot move.

Last Sunday we were in the garden centre and susie spotted a battery powered flyswatter, which we bought.

Which garden centre? |

Having wandered various boards, I came across a post saying that B & Q sell electric fly swatters !
http://www.informedconsent.co.uk/boards/ukevents...
Go forth and buy. If we all go shopping, they'll think there's a plague of flies coming!! Pain is your friend. It lets you know you're not dead yet

We have an electric fly swatter it's given us many great Benny Hill style moments How can we grow old when we are not trying *The Delays

Buckingham Garden Centre - not one of the big multiples I'm afraid. To grow old is mandatory.
To grow up is optional

We bought one from here http://www.thesharperedge.co.uk/
Just search for 'fly swatter'.
Try holding it against the skin rather than just swatting, much better effect The Purpose of Life's Journey is not to arrive safely at the grave in a well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting ... Holy Shit!! What a Ride!!!

TAZapper
Has anybody here heard of this (the tazapper)? It's been features on many popular websites on kink.com for years.
http://www.toystoysonline.com/electric.htm
I have a couple of questions:
firstly, how does such a device work? It *looks* like a modified electric fly swatter but I've heard that it feels completely different (no muscle contraction or burning). It sparks more (the fly swatters I've seen don't spark when touched on skin, only when touched on metal). I assume that it uses the same principle as the fly zappers - charge a capacitor to high voltage, and discharge into something. I would guess that the capacitor in the TAZapper is much smaller (i.e. safer), but holds a higher voltage (and hence sparks more) than the fly zappers.
My second question: is it legal here?
|
It looks suspiciously like a gas lighter to me.

fly squatters are not the best and can lead to nasty burns .... a friend of mine still has a scar on his hand from one ..... however, check out pound shops, they usually sell them ...... mine came from the gadget shop and has no guard ....... if you get enough speed up, it makes bluebottles disintegrate on contact if you have a problem with something i've said or done ........ feel free to tell DM, .......so he can rip the piss out of you too

Gas lighters are usually piezo-electric... this thing is battery powered. Also you should watch the demo video (it's on the product page).

No. Well they might be, but if you do the maths on a simple fly zapper:
Energy = 0.5 * C * V^2
= 0.5 * 330E-09 * 2250000
= 0.371 J
= 371 mJ
To put that in perspective, you can start to feel capacitor discharges at about 1mJ. Most people would say 10mJ is slightly unpleasant, and everyone finds 100mJ distinctly unpleasent. Above 100mJ causes involuntary muscle movement. A tazer is about 500mJ.
Ohms law (V=IR) still applies to capacitors, so there is an exceptionally high current at the beginning of the discharge:
I = V/R = 1500/2000 = 750 mA (assuming very low skin resistance)
the only reason this current doesn't kill is that the total shock lasts for less than 0.7ms ... my point being that it is too close for comfort.
Another fact you might find interesting... the BSI place a limit of 45 microcoulombs of electric charge on most devices. Charge=Capacitance*Voltage, so
Charge = 330E-09 * 1500 = 495 microcoulombs!
more than 10 times what's considered safe.
Of course, this all depends on the capacitor at the end of the fly swatter, but they are not made for what you are using them for, and are not consistently manufactured. |
