'Nature Does Nothing uselessly'
Aristotle

For those of us hopelessly devoted to statistics and dates, it was a month today when the earthquake happened. There were instant ponderings over MSN and mobile phone on what had just happened, comparisons with who felt the quake the most, stories shared at work the next day.

One part of human nature is in face of adversity react in ways that offer positive affirmations. It is no suprise that after 9/11 happened, there was an increase in pregnancies, marriages - all the things that are often referred to as positive affirmations of life and love. Even the people not directly affected react in some way.

Yes, the earthquake certainly was not a grand scale disaster, but it did no doubt spur positive reactions with a lot of people - even if it was a quick chat with previously unknown people about the event.

In the big scheme of life, disaster does not have to be a big even to have huge effects. Anyone who has had a panic attack over the absense of milk when trying to have their first coffee of the day can certainly say that :-p! Sometime the smallest things like a bout of rain or a temperamental computer can bring you to the edge of tears and make you lash out on other people. Sometimes you face a hard day at work, and realize that it's not a job you enjoy anymore. Sometimes things happen and you think 'I don't need this anymore'. Sometimes something minute happens, and it brings out a subconcious thought to surface.

Adversity at any level can drive a wedge between people or bring them together; so can shared traumatic experiences, no matter how small they are.

Maybe certain things happen for a reason.
