J gets all giddy when it snows. He really likes it, sick man that he is. So Easter weekend saw capi volunteering to stay at home with Sherbetface and the demented puppy/guinea pig that is the smallest member of the household. J and I went off in my camper to take pics up in the Lakes with a mad whippet oh and a camera or two, you can't really take pics with a whippet.
Tis a shame but the van is only designed as a two berth, I never really envisaged landing in the midst of a ready made family so only two of us can use it at a time and it will be a while before I can change it for a bigger version.
Off we went on Saturday, Evil Twin had arrived and was giggling and giving us that look that said, "You truly are deranged, what the **** is the matter with hotels?" And then she said it "You truly are........." see, I know what that look meant! So Northbound we were. I had booked us a National Trust site near Ambleside for the first night and Doris was duly programmed to take us up into the hills.
Now, when Evil Twin had said we were deranged, we found a whole new meaning for the word when we got there. You see, my camper has heating, and insulation and hot water and a fridge and microwave and a telly.... Here was a field full of somewhere approaching 150...........tents! Yes, tents! In March, in the snow. Hundreds of people dressed like Max Wall in boiler insulation jackets with little legs sticking out the bottom. They had a "no open fire" rule on the site, bugger that, it was like a pyromaniacs convention!
The next morning, as we wandered round to the phone to call herself we met a charming young lady who was getting ready for a days walking. We asked how she slept in her tent in the cold (it was -3deg) "Oh, it's my first time camping, this is great, we were all warm and toasty" As her girlfriend appeared glowering somewhat at J. Ha! blooming dykes get everywhere lol.
Next up was Keswick, I wanted to photograph the stone circle at Castlerigg and capi and I had missed out on that one last year. http://www.visitcumbria.com/kes/casstone.htm So Doris was programmed once more and off we went. Except there had been some 4 inches of snow overnight and the roads were as icy as heck. Doris takes shortest routes and I really should have reprogrammed her or used a map because she took us over a rather steep hill. That was covered in ice. I made it up to the top Ok with just a couple of wheelspins and as I'm perched at the top a very pale German came up the other way and having lowered his window, exclaimed "You can't go down there in that!" Ok Herman, it's single track road and I'm in a van, nowhere to turn it and I'm not going back down the ice I just came up in reverse!
Can you toboggan in a van? Lucky can!
For about 200 yards I had to inch the van down the hill with the handbrake in my left hand, hauling on it to balance the brakes and to stop all the weight going on the front wheels, because they were just sliding, towards a wall and a rather steep drop. Well the wall looked sturdy enough but I didn't want to try it out. As we descended we started to hit tarmac between the patches of ice and eventually it gave way to asphalt once more. That's when my legs actually started to shake. I've driven most types of vehicle in all sorts of terrain and conditions, but usually because they have been built for it. Vans are not built for tobogganing down hillsides.
We made it though, without a scratch and only wobbly legs which J reminds me that it is good to scare the living c*** out of myself now and again, I'll know I'm alive.
And we did get some good pics of the stone circle and all the wonderful hills that surround Keswick. Over Kirkstone Pass later in the day and, mad fool that I am, we got some pics of Ullswater at sunrise. Not that the sun actually rose at all, more like tiptoed out of bed and grabbed a snooze behind the nearest cloud.
Returned home yesterday to capi and Sherbetface and various menagerie, now the van is cleaned and back in it's residence and I have some photo editing to do and I can now do it on my rather funky 19 inch flat screen monitor because I have had to concede that I can't really keep doing it on a laptop, it's grinding to a halt.
Doing more photos this weekend which I am really looking forward to, that, and a nice hot bath.

So you take him up a mountain and then do your best Eddie the Eagle bit down the other side, looking too closely at walls and big hulking drops. Then you collapse in a heap with adrenalin and the shakes. Now you know how much J wants to learn to drive, has this helped I wonder??? Hop-a-long Hive
