A couple of weeks ago my son and his girlfriend had their flat broken into (for the 2nd time).
It was at 10pm on a Thurs night, they were both in the flat. The front door was kicked in... 4 huge guys, armed with axes, knives & iron bars, faces covered... ransaked and trashed the whole flat and also attacked both my son and his girlfriend in the process. For what? A couple of mobile phones, a PS3 & a purse! They didn't take the TV, probably too big, but smashed it anyway. Thankfully the injuries inflicted weren't too bad, but my son was hit on the head with an iron bar, which so easily could have been fatal.
Today a friend told me about a 19 year old lad who was murdured in Newcastle the other night. Apparently he'd been to visit a mate and left at 9pm. It seems 3 other lads followed him and beat him to death with planks of wood just outside his home. He was so badly beaten that he was unrecognisable. His Mum had to identify him by a tattoo. And all for what? Well, for an X-Box it would seem.
I know there are countless other stories like this. And stories about good people who try to do something about it and also end up getting murdered for it.
My son says this is the world we live in. I wonder when it was that a mobile phone or an X-Box became more valuable than a human life.

Thanks Mel. But any trust they had in the world was destroyed a long time ago. They're both pretty tough, they've had to be. But this has really shaken them. ~i know i have the right to remain silent... i just don't have the ability!~

So very sorrow to hear this hun, although I think the human race as a whole is evolving for the better, it often seems the bastards are getting bastardier. I hope they both get better (or get to move house) soon. I cant imagine how angry it would make me if something like this happened to one of my children. Love, Simon. Play the game, everybody play the game of love.... Edited 25 Mar 08, 3:17 PM by Visualize

My sympathies to you and your son. As you point out, things could so easily have been far worse. This type of crime is becoming much more prevalent. The gang, although ruthless, was pretty amateur. A more sophisticated crew would have tortured them for their bank details/PIN numbers, etc, and left them tied up while they emptied money from accounts. If this is a common occurrence in the area where you live, it is wise to invest in a security gate. http://groups.msn.com/SYNDICAOSSUORUM

Thanks S. I wish I could agree with you about the human race as a whole getting better, but sadly I don't actually see any evidence of that
I wish there was something I could do to get them out of there right now, unfortunately I can't but do hope they are able to move in the not too distant future.

They live in Birmingham, the area isn't great, but it's far from the worst. And yes, I have suggested they get an internal security gate, thanks for the reply.

Yep. I am generally a very optimistic, glass-half-full person who realises that we never get to hear any of the good stuff that people do in the news. However, at times the world does just seem to suck big time.
