Chris Rea Concert (No Kink!) (3)

I bought Himself Chris Rea tickets for Christmas, with the understanding that He could take whoever He wanted to the concert. Surprisingly no 2 son wasn't interested (Musical boy) so yours truly smiled politely and tried hard to be enthusiastic ;-)

We weren't quite sure what to expect as the show was billed as 'not quite his usual stuff'. The warm-up act was OK- a young man with an acoustic guitar that he played very well, but after 3 songs they all sounded the same to me! I did think that I'd heard his music before though... maybe on Torchwood?

Then a half hour interval, (with a cornetto ;-)) and finally the main act. They first set was done in the style of the Shadows music, half a dozen tracks, well-played but I was sitting there thinking "Oh dear!" Then the backdrop changed and they went into more bluesy stuff. Again slick and professional (the accompanying lighting was very clever) and I could appreciate the technique even if it wasn't really to my taste. The music didn't hold my attention- it kept wandering. For the finale the backdrop changed again and we were launched into the old classics- 'Road to Hell' and 'Let's Dance'. Now that was more like it! I was clapping and cheering by the time they finished.

Overall a very professional, competent performance by skilled musicians (excellent guitar from all, fab keyboards, great rhythm on the drums) but unless you're a Chris Rea fan, it doesn't really kick off until three tracks from the end.

Himself loved it and had a great time, and I enjoyed watching His pleasure :-)

Arguably, we would not have had Mark Knopfler without Chris Rea. That could be seen as a good, or bad thing. I think, overall good!

Rea is a consumate musician and songwriter and glad to see him mixing it up a little. Those in the know say that is journey into the blues is certainly worthwhile and in hindsight, probably long overdue.

For me, Steel River is as good as it gets for that earlier period/genre.

Glad you both enjoyed.

I saw him in Aberdeen, he looked quite ravaged after his recent ill health but he performed well. Most of the material was from his excellent Blue Guitar set. Then at the end he did the classic hits, first class musician. His voice had a magic timbre which far surpassed his guitar playing, well worth going to see.
