Debate? (9)

When a post is made on the boards and invites comments, opinions, thoughts and responses a debate is opened.
When a person replies to the OP, about the subject matter - they are debating the issue.
If the reply to that comment is aggressive and an attack on a persons opinion rather than about the issues being discussed - it is no longer about the subject of the OP or part of the debate.
If one has an opposing opinion to the OP it does not invite name calling, it invites more information from anothers point of view i.e. more details on their opinion.
When a question is posed, it is a request for more information - not a request for defamation of character.
When polite replies are given it is not an invitation to respond with more character assassination.
If I have offended anyone recently with my strongly held views and opinions, it was not my intention but I do not appreciate when a debate is ruined by twisting what I have said into something that it wasn't.
A debate should remain on subject and should never degenerate into analysis of a persons character - often with very little basis in reality and totally detached from it. If name-calling is brought in to the debate it then ceases to be one.
Importing quotes from other posts - on different matters - is not "proof positive" that a perceived preconception about a persons character is supported by those posts - and in some cases they could be taken totally out of context; without knowing the direction that someone was heading with them.
Up close and personal is better face-to-face than it is in black and white, with less likelihood of there being misunderstandings from either side.
Unfortunately, people disagree from time to time, some relish the fight - with teeth bared and claws out, others prefer to agree to disagree. More often than not, I'm a member of the latter group.

Easy Solution.........Don't get involved with a Keyboard cowboy who's as thick as a pork chop.......otherwise you become the apple sauce to accompany it. |

I do think that some people 'look out' for particular/individual bloggers just to be unpleasant and have no interest in what's being said at all. They wish to pooh pooh them for no other reason than to be an arse.
I have experienced this in the past, and have witnessed it also.
I know a couple of people who just don't bother blogging anymore.
I always find being really very, very polite when responding to them has the best effect.
You can imagine them sitting at their computer, steam coming out of their ears cursing away...
" Damn! That's not how I wanted her to respond!! "
Tough!
[If you are willing to look at another person's behaviour towards you as a reflection of the state of their relationship with themselves rather than as a statement about your value as a person, then you will, over a period of time, cease to react to them.]

Well, I suppose I should be more 'Christian' in the way I deal with them?
But that means being nice!.......Shudders!

What an intelligent, thoughtful and reasonable post. Exactly what i would have expected from you. Obviously you have strongly held views, as we all do, and you express them in a reasonable way without resorting to personal abuse.
You are good in debate as i know having debated with you and read your posts.
Before anyone says "oh yes he's OwnedByChartreuse, he has to say that, she probably told him to say it". I don't have to say it and i wouldn't if i didn't mean it, i know my own mind and i speak it.
