How do you evaluate perfection? (4)

It's something that everyone can recognise, although it's something different to us all.

Think of a song, probably your very favourite. Think about how it all just fits together so completely; the instruments blending seemlessly, the vocals fitting like a glove. Not a single wasted note, just the right amount of energy, enough emotion that it's not too bland, but not enough to drive it to the point of being overly sentimental... Not too long, not too short, and something you never tire of hearing. Really, what else is there to say but that it's perfect?

Beyond that, take an album. In a way it's an extension of what I've just written, but more expansive; about how songs fit together and are placed, rather than just the individual songs themselves. A series of moments being brought together to make a cohesive whole which, in the best cases, is greater than the sum of its parts. Again, the description of perfect is one of the few possible descriptions that I can see.

It's no surprise I'm using the analogy of music to demonstrate this, but I'll move on to something else before I start throwing links to certain songs and albums that I rate in that way ;)

Consider a favourite film. It doesn't matter what genre it is, since it's something that can be just as personal as taste in music. But think about what makes it so good; is it the characters? Their development or interactions? Is it the plot? Development, revelation or intrigue? The moods or feelings it provokes during watching? Of course, it could just be an escape for a couple of hours while you watch people blow shit up and kill stuff, but the point is that it's a favourite for a reason. And again, we're back to the individual view of it as being perfection, or the closest example of it that someone could point to in the area.

I could go on and on and ramble about books, art, foodstuffs, people, events, times and beyond. The list is close to endless, and I think the point above is made well enough without needing to sledgehammer it even further.

But that doesn't really provide an answer to the question in the title; how do you evaluate perfection? Well, really, there's no one common answer. Even the same person would give different answers as to why they found their examples of the above perfect. So I think all that can be said is that on the whole, you just know when something seems that way :)

perfect is

a hot bath, bubbles, glass of wine, good book, diamonds sparkling, dog on floor sleeping, other half happy, friends happy, a sunny day, some kink and cheesecake.

(perhaps not all at once!)

I don't think there is any need to evaluate perfection as such, even though analyzing it is a great pleasure. Just always remember - perfection can be more perfect, still.
