Fiction or real life... (1)

The battle between good and evil, light and dark, whatever you want to call it, fascinates me. It never ceases to amaze me how characters in classic tales/modern fiction such as Lord of the Rings, or the Abhorsen trilogy manage to overcome unsurmountable odds to rid the world of evil/bad/dark/whathaveyou.

I guess it's the pessimist in me, or just a really twisted streak, but I always wondered where the story would have ended if Frodo had really been killed by Shilob - would Sam his trusty gardener have been able to make it to Mt. Doom to throw the ring in? Somehow I sincerely doubt it. He cried more times in the trilogy of films than a newborn child - what was he hoping that would achieve...that the big nasty orcs and goblins would take pity on him? I apologise now to anyone that hasn't seen the LOTR films.

The two such examples I provided may ring no bells whatsoever, or the exact opposite. What strikes me so much though is that eternal optimism, and the ability to see a way through isn't just limited to the world of novels, hobbits, dragons or faeries - every day somewhere in the world, someone has a dark moment. Regardless of whether that dark moment lasts a heartbeat or a lifetime, you can then sub-divide that person into one of three categories.

The swimmers, the strugglers (or drunken swimmers as I like to say) and the sinkers. No prizes for guessing which sub-category deals with personal problems in what kind of manner.

Me, I'm a drunken swimmer, I straggle behind occasionally, and usually need a good kick up the arse to get myself back on track.

Something that astounds me is the swimmers - some of the things you hear about people going through, more often than not of greater strife than your own - yet they are consistant, they ~deal~ with it. How on earth they manage it, I have no idea...is it genetic? I wonder if some people are just so ruddy stubborn that the second something looks like it's going arse-over-tit, they dig their heels in and lower their centre of gravity...slightly akin to a blackface sheep or mountain goat.

Before I start havering a load of nonsense that nobody understands - not that that hasn't happened already of course - I guess what I'm trying to conclude this little rambling with is that the next time you think a Hollywood blockbuster slightly ridiculous, try looking at real life, and real people.

Nice blog lumi. Sometimes in life you have a choice, sink or swim. Personally I've always found it preferable to swim though I've ingested my fair share of water! lol.

I'm in my own world. It's Ok, they know me here.
