Extended warranty (7)

DO NOT BUY AN EXTENDED WARRANTY THEY ARE JUST A MONEY MAKING SCAM.
I bought a new computer 11 months ago for £420.00 and received a letter today to extend the warranty for another 4 years for as it says just £191.00. As if i'm going to send that manufacture another £191.00 which is nearly half the price of computer i've bought. If my computer has any faults they are likely to show within the first year of the manufactures warranty and I think my computer is not likely to go wrong within the first 5 years of use.
People on IC tell me your views about this money making scam.

for that amount of money you could almost replace the machine - and get one hell of a lot better machine out of it!
*hugs*

You're absolutely right. It's better not to shop at Dixons Stores Group at all; they're no help whatsoever when things go wrong. |

I purchased a new pc from PC world 2 1/2 years ago, I didnt take out an extended warranty but I do pay £7 a month for something similar. Within the first three months the hard drive broke which after much wrangling they repaired. After a year the power supply broke and was replaced and after just under two years the motherboard had to be replaced. Im just grateful I paid the monthly fee now as this pc has been crap.

Agreed, most appear to be a fiddle. The only company I have bought one from recently is Richer Sounds, who offer a five year extended cover for £10 on most things. That's pretty cheap. And you get the tenner back at the end if you don't use the warranty - IF you remember to reclaim it, within the time they give you, which isn't much! But certainly better than most electrical retailer extended warranties I have been offered. And no I don't work for Richer Sounds, honest!

If your paying a monthly subscription thing instead of paying out a full whack for extra warranty, just have a count up of how much that is costing you a year.. then x it by four and see how much more you may be paying than the original cost of purchasing four years outright.. its usually more..
I bought pc from pc world. pc broke, I took it back after much disatisfaction with the phone help. Pc was replace like for like after much fuss. That pc did the same thing and so after much harassing on phone, pc got taken away and eventually was written off.
Because I had warranty and this was now into its 2nd year, they sent me vouchers to replace it.
My original pc was 400 quid.
I got vouchers for 700 quid..
Think I did alright huh?

My advice would depend on the following things:
If you don't have an idea about how to fix your PC and don't have any REALLY good mates who professionally build & repair PC's then it can be a good idea as a repair bill can easily pass £150 without a problem. That said the chances of you keeping a PC for a whole 5 years are pretty slim - most people replace within 3-4 years.
If you know how to replace the main components of your PC then on the whole you can get these a lot cheaper than you would if getting one of the main retailers to repair it for you and of course you don't have to pay an engineer to repair it for you, so to fix the the same fault as the £150 repair bill could cost you as little as £25, maybe even less.
The only other titbit of advice I have is that if you are buying a laptop then extended warranties are a better idea as 70% of laptop faults result in the laptop being written off and replaced BUT make sure they cover you for accidental damage! **waiting for inspiration to strike**

I agree with Danver, you are likely to find a friend/acquaintance who can fix a normal desktop or tower PC for parts cost (plus maybe a few beer tokens).
Laptops are a different matter - screen problems in particular can cost a small fortune to fix and most parts are a lot harder to source.
