A beginner's question: I'm a bit confused about the expression "topping from the bottom". As I understand it, a submissive is someone who hands over power, and a bottom is someone who is on the receiving end of bondage, CP and other fun. The bottom doesn't hand power over except to the obvious extent that they might be immobilised or whatever. So if they decide to bark out orders for what they want, or perhaps just drop the odd hint here and there, why is this said to entail usurping the role of the top? I don't think it's soemthing I would do, so I have no personal axe to grind here.

the bottom does hand over control of what happens in the scene. the only thing that isn't handed over is the bottoms ability to stop any activity by safewording. More experienced players do away with safewording comepletely when they know each other better so they dont even have that benefit therefore barking orders or dropping hints is attempting to control something they have given control of over to the top hence topping from the bottom

The methods can be more subtle than actually saying what you want ie bratting or misbehaving in order to get a punishment for example. I think topping from the bottom is a general statement and does not just apply to tops and bottoms only, it applies to subs and dom/mes aswell. Edited 28 Feb 08, 4:39 PM by puppie

Thank you. But if they've handed over control, doesn't that effectively make them a temporary sub?

"Topping from the Bottom" is just a general term applied by doms and tops when their subs, bottoms or slaves are doing things they don't like. I wouldn't try to define it too precisely, simply because the people who actually use the phrase don't define it precisely either. Toak FEMALE, BONDAGE-FRIENDLY MODEL SOUGHT. I am seeking to update my "How To" shibari bondage pictures (see my profile pics, the clothed blonde tied in red and black) with a model more "enthusiastic" about BDSM, and who is happy to be photographed nude. MEMO ME if this is you.

just useless bdsm jargon made up by someone who probably didn't have the wit or ability to be good at what he (or she) does ..... but ...after extensive research ... the oldest reference i could find for topping from the bottom was in the 1766 ye aldermans book of domination which states that; "she struggled agaist the binds and did complain that the harsh rope did cause much scuffing of the skin. For which i beat her severely and no longer will she try topping my commands for she now knows her place to be at the bottom" hence topping from the bottom !! (and for the newbies ... there is no aldermans book of domination !) save the cheerleader save the world ..... Hiro Nakamura |
