As you can probably tell, I'm among those that love the day from start to finish. (note: that was sarcasm)
Of course, my view is obviously influenced by being a single type, and an interesting 'Phoenix fun fact' (can I trademark that?) is that for some strange reason I've been single on every Valentines Day that I've been alive for, although thankfully I've never been dumped around the time before.
It's annoying that I always get down around this time of year though. I know fine well that it's just a commercial 'celebration' of a day, and I know that I'm of the mind that someone should cherish their partner and treat them as well as possible every day anyway, and that no excuse should be needed for little treats and things to make someone smile.
It just goes to show that there's no real sense of rationality or logic to emotion, at least sometimes.
Friends try to say the right thing; namely pointing out that the day doesn't matter anyway, and as I've pointed out they're right. But they then routinely beam with pride about what they'll be doing with their partners on the day to celebrate. Platitudes are pretty empty at the best of times, but when people basically unintentionally admit as such within 30 seconds it makes you wonder why they bother saying it at all. And even the people that do speak sense, and mean it, are somewhat underminded by the hordes and hordes of people who do froth at the mouth with glee over the very idea of the day.
It really accentuates the things that are missing and that's a rubbish feeling, frankly.
Yes, I'm undoubtedly being a misery about it all, and could probably be accused of whinging a bit, but I don't really care. Hopefully the bleak mood will disappear as soon as this hateful day does!
Tonight will be interesting though, since I'm disappearing off to see the wonderful Smashing Pumpkins here in Nottingham; and this will be by myself, despite having an extra ticket. Because one way or another everyone I've thought to ask seems to be absorbed by this fucking day, for better or worse. Either that, or they're an 18yr old student who hasn't even heard of the band. These people need more than an academic education!
That said, yesterday I did start to wonder if I should bother going at all, and considering this is one of my favourite bands ever it probably shows quite how I'm feeling!
I'm not going to end on some great call to arms of the lonely and unhappy, as poetic as the idea is. I just want to say that anyone who does feel that way, you aren't alone in it.

Surely on a day like this everyone should be rejecting electricity and using candles to set the mood? Must be romantic to pretend you're still in the middle-ages When a man loves a woman it should be understood, | |

Valentines day sucks! Just another day to remind me that i'm alone! Even if i wasn't single (on every valentines day, just like you), i don't think i'd like the day......i'd rather be sweet and romantic spontaniously all year round! Take care bisexual_p0rn_star

Well Mr Corgan, in his infinite wisdom, decided to march off stage after about 15 or so songs, and not to return... A setlist posted online suggested they'd be playing 29 tracks in all, so it's ended up as going firmly in the 'really disappointing' column sadly. Kinda sums the whole day up really!
