I've given up being Agnostic and turned Atheist. If you hate a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then you'll be a mile away and have his shoes. http://obliterarti.wordpress.com/

Flogging is a religious practice don't you know? I wouldn't consider giving it up though, 40 days is too much!

Perhaps time I should answer my own question. I am a practicing christian; I say this by way of explanation, not to claim that I always live up to the highest ideals of that religion. Incidentally there are many people on IC who are followers of religions inlcuding christianity - a little surprised this thread has attracted mainly those who dislike religion. I do find value in the practice of observing Lent as a penitential season, quiet, reflective, not overly given to self indulgence, a time when one considers ones own weaknesses and failings, but also the brokenness of the whole world. It wold be a gloomy outlook for life, but for 40 days, followed by the celebration of life that is Easter, has great meaning and value for some followers of christianity. I wrote a weblog about Advent recently, and much of what I say there applies in an even greater measure to Lent, though the focus in Lent is more penitential rather than expectant. The musical contrasts also apply. Happy for others to follow their own spiritual or atheistic beliefes and practices to make sense of life. Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.

I have given something up for Lent. I dont usually give anything up, having had a roller coaster ride with organised religion over the years, and an inward battle of my own. This year though i feel good that i have and others will have the benefit of it. Each to their own, blah blah blah. kate x

Huh? Because some religious nuts self flagellate? So would that make eating a religious practice simply because religious people eat?

I have good, very good reasons for not believing in any religious nonsense. You want to believe in any of it, you go ahead. Master Chopper. WWW.SPANKINGTOOLS.COM |
