I am never happy when it's said you like this because you had a difficult childhood, low self esteem and feel unworthy. None of that applies to me. it's just my basic natural sexuality. Just musing over the article in today's Times a Q&A sex column which looks at spanking today.

It just reads to me like a standard "fill some space" drivel article.

I am also trying to find where

"Research has shown that 95 per cent of sexual masochists are men " has popped up from. Certainly doesnt match the ratios of people I have met in real life. 50/50 seems more realistic based on observation.

Depressing reactions there, the Doctor focusing on her mental health, the 'agony aunt' avoiding the spanking by concentrating on the more familiar territory of threesomes. One paragraph struck me;

"If your wife is truly masochistic, she is relatively unusual in one respect. Research has shown that 95 per cent of sexual masochists are men and that only 5 per cent of women derive sexual pleasure through pain. Even this minority isn't always entirely masochistic; one in three of them is occasionally sadistic, often biting and scratching more vigorously than is usual."

I wonder what this research is. I know male subs outnumber female subs significantly, but those figures seem out to me.

The letter writer should come here, he'd get much better advice :)

LOL, the writer would get some good ideas for better things to do on a Saturday morning than reading low grade newspapers, thats for sure.

I am quite shocked at the blatant ignorance displayed by some "Experts".

I wouldn't mind knowing where they get thier figures from. I was sorely tempted to reply andpoint them in the direction of the LAM, Hades, IC and my own site. Whats the point? You can't educate pork.

The phrase "research has shown", without pointing you in the direction of the actual piece of research, is just another way of forcing a personal agenda down people's throats. Like this article.

Research has shown that although the old subject of "disgustingly depraved suburban couples and their bedroom habits", has for once left the pages of the Daily Mail, it still being written about in exactly the same bigotted, ignorant and moralistic terms. Be it on The Times, The Guardian, or your local paper. One subject. kink, (as my own personal research proves) that unites all churches like no other.

And Dr Stuttaford is very wise and very competent which is why that statistic and his comments particularly surprised me. He worked for years in a genito-urinary clinic I believe in the past. I would be surprised if those stats weren't nearer 50/50 but perhaps women in surveys are less likely to reveal they like pain.

I thought i was an expert on ignorance, but i believe i've been out experted by the experts in this highly regarded broadsheet (according to my own personal research). I guess i'd better stick to cooking pork

I agree with you. It's in my opinion (but I have no research to prove this, damn!) why there are more men in the scene, in general, than women: denial or shyness to acknowledge sexual urges. The good girl/wife/teacher/mother/Goddess syndrome?

But I'm digressing. Sorry.

"Research has shown that 95 per cent of sexual masochists are men and that only 5 per cent of women derive sexual pleasure through pain."

I fixated on the incorrect wording of this sentence - it gives you two percentages which add up to 100, but they're percentages of two completely different groups (sexual masochists and women in general)

I know I'm being a pedant but it's another giveaway that the article's wank.

It did read like someone saying:

"I'm thinking of going to the corner shop for a pint of milk and a loaf. Do you think I should do it?"

... only to be given a 7000 word essay that basically says:

"You might get run over, you might get kidnapped by a bum-fiend, it might start raining rhinos, blah blah blah ..."

Arseholes.
