Most interesting documentary tonight on Horizon. Didnt realise the brain would be so easily influenced (more so to men it was proven in the programme) in only 48hrs. Very interesting programme.

I adore sensory deprivation...don't have a huge amount of experience of it, but I find it a time to retreat completely into myself and can actually get quite relaxed! I have a leather hood that literally once it goes on, I'm off in a little world of my own...the smell of the leather, the muffling of the sound of the outside world, and of course the complete loss of sight - yum! :-)

I agree with you Miss_Lead, it was a very interesting programme, though I have to admit I was extremely surprised at the way they ran the experiment. Surely it would have been better to pick out a trend in women if there was more than one female subject? With both types of experiment they had more than one male, though just one female, and those two women differed greatly in their reactions. Just my tuppence worth, I just thought it could be better analysed if they had two male and two female for each section?

We're adults. When did that happen? And how do we make it stop?

I guess that to prove this, it would have been better with more females to put this to the test. Although how the first lady reacted, I thought she was going to be out of her cell within the hour. To react ok to testing at the end, amazed me if honest. There must be some different wiring in the brain to not leave you so open to suggestive questioning.

I wanted to see more tests run on them but it didnt really happen did it? Anybody up for doing our own tests? ;)

We have a volunteer ( see Merryn's post) and I have been busy with some home improvements.

I would like to use water - a large bathtub - but how to keep the water at an appropriate temperature? Just running in water creates noise/vibration and movement sensations.

Are there any safe and affordable thermostatically controlled devices out there?

Waterbed heaters are large flat pads about 3' x 2' and maybe about 1/8" thick. They don't go in the water itself as a waterbed mattress is sealed. They lie underneath the membrane the mattress sits on flat on the plinth of the bed. The thermost usually has two sensors, one lies under the mattress to sense the bed, the other in the room for room compensation. From memory power output is about 300W

http://www.abcwaterbed.com/heat1.htm is the first link I came across with a picture.

Might be worth investigation. Through the wall of the bath will the heater be able to conduct enough heat to a) do the job? and b) be reliable and not do the heater any harm as some of them aren't supposed to be used in free air?

Though to be fair, didn't she seem to spend most of the 48 hrs asleep, in stark contrast to some of the men?

I'll never regret this, ...although I may rue and lament it

Sensory deprivation

More seriously, I use floatation tanks and that's the best experience in sensory deprivation I now. I actually went floating yesterday... :-)

Floating naked in the dark, water is at body temperature and the amount of salt put in it makes you float without even having to try, it's very close to total absence of gravity. Total silence, which means that the only noises you hear are coming from inside your own body (blood rushing in your veins and arteries), breathing sounds, tiny crisp popping sounds coming from your joints as they relax more and more, etc.

Mentally, it's amazing. I've been floating for several years, and as it is an cumulative experience, the effects on me now are literally mind-blowing; 2 hours of this will compensate for staying up all night in term of feeling refreshed mentally and physically. In the course of a typical session (1 hour) I experience something similar to a deep meditation state or a full blown psychedelic experience.

As I float on my back, my head tends to relax so much that it stretches backwards and I end up with my eyes under water, with just my mouth and nose above water level, which makes the experience as total as can be.

Shadow

Shadow that sounds absolutely beautiful - I really must experience this. To only be listening to what is going on internally and to hear your joints relax and unwind must be so fabulous.

Goes off to search for a nice place. Sure there are a couple of contra-indications for me though!.

All we need now is a big bag of epsom salts and a divers helmet and we're away.
