I can't believe Afflecks may become a thing of the past. There doesn't seem to be the clusters of individual traders as there used to be. I live in brum, and our alternative shopping place Oasis, is nothing fashion wise compared to Afflecks. Everyone knows the place, and is well worth the jaunt upto Manchester to visit!
Seriously, something isn't quite right with the owners etc.. and i can't beleive it may be going..... fi XX ..I've been watching You, control me.

Nobody knows what's happening. It's wrong to speculate, so lets not, ok? I'm sure the truth will emerge shortly.

I was up there yesterday and was talking to one of the stall holders... so many stalls have gone already. They might have stood a better chance of keeping it open if the stall holders had stuck together, but with so many stalls already gone, it is going to be hard to keep it open. there is volume in numbers, but from what is left, i cant see how it will be financially viable for the rest to remain. I hope it stays open, but im not optimistic. Alot of the stalls are taking email addresses to keep in touch with their regular customers in the hope that if they set up elsewhere, they can notify them. Ts1..xx

I was down there last weekend, and it certainly was starting to look thinned out with a lot of empty stalls. Unfortunately I think a lot of traders aren't happy with uncertainty, and are making other arrangements elsewhere to continue their business, which is understandable. Given that the bottom has started falling out of the property market, it may well be that to leave the place alone for the next few years might be the best option for the owning company. However the uncertainty the whole question over the lease being renewed has caused may well cause the death of Afflecks as traders move out even if a new lease did appear. Bruntwood are a company that lease their buildings to businesses/companies, they don't sell them. So as for as the property market goes, it won't make a difference I shouldn't have thought. Edited 19 Jan 08, 10:22 AM by Chilli_Hendrix

Not too sure, mate. I'm sure there would be enough businesses/companies/agencies interested in renting a prime city centre property, though.

It looks like a pretty poor turnout for the Affleck's support demo. I know that I didn't go down there myself, but part of me felt that it was something for the younger people, who populate the place every weekend, to do. Looking at the pictures it appears that it was only the old-farts like me who turned out - no doubt remembering the great times they once had there. That's the trouble with youth, I guess. You really don't know what you've got 'till it's gone. Sp. ...digging below the moral high-ground.

When we were there we thought the exact opposite. It seemed that most people were under the age of 18!! I guess it depends on when the photographer arrived. |
