Fetishists wear fuchsia? Seriously... it's a great idea and i think the use of the word "perv" instead of pervert is a good idea, although i wasn't really against the word "pervert" to start with. i'll certainly be wearing a purple top that day, and grinning like a maniac at other people wearing purple (who probably won't be "pervs" at all and will think me very mad!)

The thing is we're talking about a linguistic trap. What we do is perversion, because of the narrow definition of what sex is supposed to be. We live in a culture with strong puritan roots and historically any sex that wasn't conducted in the dark under the covers was wrong, perverted and evil. We don't have a word for sexual perversions that is particularly positive, because the culture never produced one. Kinky sort of fits the bill, but it's pretty gender specific (women are kinky, men are pervs). Trying to reclaim the word pervert is really shooting for the moon, but it's a start, and even if it doesn't quite succeed it's going to make a positive difference. The best comparison I can see with it is how the word Nigger was reclaimed by black Americans. It's always been a negative word, and some black Americans resent it's use even now among other black folks, but it's use was a wake up call and it did have lasting and profound effects on the prevailing culture. Hell hath no fury like the vast robot armies of a woman scorned. Edited 11 Jan 08, 6:45 PM by Doghouse_Reilly

Oh my god fuschia...thats pink, Im not bloody wearing that lol. I only ever paint my nails black so for me to go purple is a quietly big statement. I work in a pub so am going to check out all the customers for purple attire and/or accessories. And I still say taking the word perv and/or pervert back is the way to go. And for anyone with children would you use the word pervert if anyone abused your children? I have a child and can think of several words but pervert is not one of them.

If you were looking for recommendations for a childminder, and someone said to you "I don't know any details, but I heard he's a pervert", would you be more or less likely to leave your child with him than if you hadn't been given that information? judy

neither, i would assume they just meant he was an adult with a kink..............if they meant there's a suspicion that this guy abuses children, i would expect them to say so The Good Lord gave me eyelashes for a reason

I will answer that with a real life example, I used to be surrounded by christian neighbours one of whom left her son in the care of a fellow church member she didnt know very well. My son was playing in the communal garden with this babysitter, I noticed and called my son in to ask who this was. He answered "I dont know", my son was then instructed to stay within my sight and not go out of my sight with this person. I personally do not give a flying fuck how a person identifies, they do not come near my son without me knowing and trusting them...be they christian, "pervert" or martian. That is just common sense, particularly as paedophiles do not wear warning signs. And you may think that from the above example that I am paranoid and my son is restricted....he isnt, he can spot potential risky people online and reports them.

Maybe I phrased it badly, but that doesn't answer my question. judy
