I completely understand what you're saying...using the word pervert can to some make our tendencies seem as if they are something wrong...and I completely disagree with that. But once the word queer was used to mark people who were once considered abnormal in their sexuality. It is not our fault that the word pervert is used to mark people who deliberately abuse non-consenting individuals...and also used to describe us. We are of course completely different from child pornographers etc and the word "pervert" is not IMO strong enough to describe such people. The word "pervert" is used by many of different sexual and consenting persuasions as a tongue in cheek comment. I still think that we should take this word and make it our own.It was not that long ago that people stopped associating the word "queer" with paedophiles...and unfortunately the "lovely" media still like to pick up on the word gay if a paedophile has a tendancy towards one particular sex. "Perverts wear Purple" has a good ring to it...and despite the association that others have given it to abuse and criminal activities. We know what it means and cant expect to change the use of the word pervert unless we have the courage to inform people and therefore make them see the difference between a perv and an abusive piece of shit. That is a terribly black and white view. Nothing in the BDSM community is that cut and dried. It is all different shades of grey... To me, so is the word pervert. www.brightonfab.com www.fetiqueuk.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhKU-tmSQR8

i was not saying that "queer" was fundamentally different...but that it used to have significantly detrimental connations and effects. It may not have been a legally recognised phrase but its damage was very significant. And forgive me for my optimism but I believe we can be accepted and use the word pervert as this word is not strong enough to describe sex offenders and paedophiles and in my opinion maybe the media keep using the word "pervert" for crimes as they're too gutless to describe certain crimes for what they really are.

So do you have any suggestion for what we should *do* as opposed to total inaction or passivity? What banner term would you happily march under? I'll happily argue and strive for a cause, so long as there is some action taking place. Even if it is associated with a potentially dodgy word. Besides which, shortening the word to pervs, although it comes from the same linguistic root, gives us a potential term to use which is still distinct from the word used negatively. You certainly don't ever here the press abbreviating the word used for paedophiles to "pervs". SO there is one solution... I would still argue that leaving *some* of the potentially derogatory words out only serves to create a stick with which we may be beaten. I argue let the press find another word, or let linguistic pressure find it. Where the same word ends up with two diverse meanings, it is the need to find distinctive words which drives the wordsmiths to look for new descripive terms, rather than lump two different groups under the same banner. As for what paedophiles and rapists will be called... How about sick? Disgusting? Criminally insane? I'm sure the good people on these boards can come up with a few alternatives. Prof Tim

I might wear purple pants (what a sexy word!) but I don't usually wear purple and I'm not ready to start telling my family and work colleagues why I'm proud to be a pervert...
I think I'd be ok explaining my fetishes tho - or at least some of them

Completely agree with that and I touched on that in the last thread and yet I'm still uncomfortable as labelling myself a pervert in the current climate.

Perhaps moving away from "pervert" we could find slogans for Fetishists... "Fetishists wear fawn" ?
On an ever so slightly more serious note I do like the earlier suggestion of using "Pervs" instead of "Perverts". Has more cuddly feel to it and provides a degree of distinction from "sick perverts". Edited 11 Jan 08, 5:30 PM by SoulPossession
