I agree with Prof Tims post on the last thread about this. I think its similar to the word "queer", this used to be a huge insult to the gay community but we took it back and it has lost at least most of its impact. It will take time to change the impact and use of "pervert" but I think it is possible. Im planning to wear something purple but as nearly everything I own is black I think I may just have to paint my nails purple.

Yes, I agree with Professor Tim's post too (and yours). I think it's interesting that the only negativity that I have seen personally has been from IC and B.com. I've spoken to a lot of people outside those of places and they haven't had any problem at all. www.brightonfab.com www.fetiqueuk.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhKU-tmSQR8

You could do what im doing and wear purple nail varnish...cheaper than buying purple clothes that you wouldnt normally wear. Or even a purple hair accessory.

I just checked your profile...nail varnish and hair accessories might not be an option for you. You could buy a single purple hair band and wear it on your wrist...its subtle but you know would know what it stands for.

I didnt read the other post. However, I dont like being called or thought of as a pervert. I have mentioned this before so I am not just jumping on a bandwagon. To me its like saying something I am doing is wrong. IMO people who look at child pornography are perverts. I am just open about my tastes and perferences.

I think most people understand that. The issue for me though is whether we should be so sensitive over what we are called? Using the term in it's pantomime lighthearted sense makes us look more like a group of people who are fun and don't need to be targeted by government legislation. - Chris "Things aren't clear, they're just transparent Edited 11 Jan 08, 4:45 PM by Backdooruk

Um most of my clothes are purple, does that make me a perpetual pervert? Women should always let men have the last words in an argument... "Yes Ma'am."

I think we have every right to be sensitive about what we are called. To me if we are called perverts what is to distinguish us from those that are truly sick in the head.

"Pervert" is fundamentally different to "queer" as a word, because "pervert" isn't a pejorative word for fetish or BDSM themselves. "Pervert" means someone who does sex which is wrong, so even after we convince everyone that fetish and BDSM aren't wrong, paedophiles and rapists will continue to be "perverts". Atheists used to be called heretics among other things. They didn't establish a valid identity in society by "reclaiming" the word heretic; they did it by making it clear they weren't pursuing a perverted, heretical form of Christianity, and were doing something else entirely.
