Having lurked (in the nicest possible way) for the last couple of years I feel 2008 is my time to add to this lovely melting pot of discussion.
Is BDSM an Art or a Science?
Art because it invokes and sparks all the feelings in us - feels good , tastes good, looks good.
or
Is it Science - a much baser chemical and physical need in us that we are lucky enough to have discovered and for some realised ?

Hi MasterJ1950, welcome out of the land of lurk. Art or Science? Good question. I would have to say for me, it's a bit of both. I have a biological need for BDSM. I know from experience I can not survive long in the vanilla world, I need kink in my life. So on that level, it's Science. But part of BDSM that I really enjoy is the art of it. The beauty of my partner helpless and bound in rope, the sight of her covered with wax, or when she says to me 'Yes Mistress' in a voice so willing to please. All of that is a form of living beauty, art and sensuality. So perhaps the drive for BDSM is science, but the appreciation of it is art. Penwiggle Mistress to the delicious and sexy Purple_Raven.

For some, it seems to me, it is a Phd. A subject with a detailed set of calculations, known and understood behaviours, reactions and disciplines. This way, follows strict rules and procedures and all must conform. This method, at worst is applied without thought to individuality or considering what would happen with a tiny change of formulae. The danger being, of course, that new ideas and wants are ignored and all become subsumed within the mantra of the scienctists. 'My Way is The Way.' On the other end of the string we have the crazy and creative art of sexual, sensual and bodywear design, behaviour and showcasing. Anything goes with little or no thought to the effect on others' the law, or the long term injury or insanity. At worst abuse is clothed as individuality, injury is clothed in consent and brutality disguised as domination insanity is disguised as fetish. Those are the worst of both. The best of both are the things we all seek. The balance of SSC/RACK or TPE. The perfect arrangement, the excitement, the sensation, the sexual satisfaction and physical and cerebral bliss. I hope that I find my 'way' through dipping in and out of both and exploring the richness in many approaches. Not found perfection yet. But hey, practice makes perfect.
If you know it in your heart, and feel it in your soul, then it is but a matter of time before you live it ..........

Hello MasterJ, this is only my second posting since I have been here, so lets raise a glass together to 2008, when the 'lurkers' come out to play!! Cheers. Art rules, no question for me. To see someone bound with beautiful bondage knotwork, flesh yielding to the will of the ropes. Colourful bruises worn as badges of honor like cherished tattoos. Hand-crafted leather whips. Ahhh, masterpieces each and every one.

It must be Art, it's all down to touch & feel, in all meanings of the words, sensual cannot be scientifically expressed, it would take away the magic |
