Well ... I have experienced both ('cause I felt I should) and, being a wussy, cowardly, pain-loathing Dom I hated both. However, on the "providing for the pleasure of others" side (evil grin) it's not so much "thud or sting" as much as preferences for individual styles of toy. I love using single tails, and they're the ultimate in intense sting - but all softs of floggers and paddles provide loads of thud too and they're great fun.
