I sucked off my entire record of work onto an external hard drive for a maintainence wipe etc. The following day the 'portable' hard drive was knocked and ground to a halt - all of my work, from modelling to rubber creations, to my book, is now locked in on this hard drive, and possibly damaged... i don't care about drive warranties on the brand new hard drive - i just want my records back. is there a real techie out there who knows how to dissasemble the internal plate disks and use recovery software for any corrupted files? The disk inside appears to be unscored, but the spindle has gone/sheared off from it's bearings
oh and incase anyone is choosing a hard drive - don't choose maxtor!

Lady Onna dont mess around with it like that, bring it, the portable and computer straight away into a professional, tell them the problem and what you want. they should be able to mount the drive on another platform and recover whatever you want. |

I've spoken to the puppy (he's a techie ya know It needs to be done in a 'clean room'...it's likely to be expensive but there are people out there who can do it for you. Good luck! BV Sometimes there simply are no words......at other times 'You filthy little cock sucking whore' seems to work just fine |

I agree totally with the above respondant....and I have always used LaCie external drives which I have found to be extremely reliable.

I have worked in the IT industry for too many years and completely agree with the suggestions you have received so far. Don't entrust this to an enthusiasts, no matter how experienced. Use a professional recovery firm. I'm afraid our corporate focused capitalistic laws prevent maxtor from having any responsibility for their shoddy quality control although you might be able to get them to pay for the recovery and replace the drive if it is very new. Hi yes 1] Use professionals. 2] There used to be a company in Hemel I believe called Vogon who were experts at taking platters spinning them up in a areospace std clean room and then moving the heads with micrometers to get the data off stripe by stripe and then reconstructing the raw data into files. Not cheap but very very good and I think they worked on a no win no fee basis Best regards Laser Stu |

Lady Onna a professional wont give a damn whats on the disk, not a care. smiles though with your looks he/she might wonder!!! i would be sure your smile would caress all there worries away. for future reference it might be worth your while buying some webspace, most people have that space anyway with a normal website, and storing the most important fies there.. |

On a side note.. I've been in IT for over 12 years and have had such problems; everything from having a drive bounce down the stairs, stolen by a playful dog and just plain crashed.. Software such as 'getdataback' has always been the best course of action and often a better tool than most professional services - such as PC World or similar muppets. I had lost an entire years worth of product design but got everything back... Hope you got all back that you needed Dante On another side note - Professionals are duty bound to report anything that is illegal on the hard drive. I design IT policies and so wanted to highlight this. Edited 20 Dec 07, 1:28 PM by danteslevel |
