I Know Bohnanza could probably give chapter, verse and how many full stops there are in any document on this subject, but I've been playing with the sort of barcodes that can be scanned by a mobile phone.

Okay, I have no idea how, or why, they work in this format, but they are a great graphical way of formatting information whether it is a name and phone number, a web address or email address in a way that the ubiquitous mobile phone can read.

While I was playing I made one for my home number that I could scan with my mobile and then ring with the touch of one button on my mobile. Another had both my home and mobile numbers on it and you could choose which to ring.

I have one waiting for approval as a picture that links to my profile on here and it can be scanned by a mobile from the screen.

I'm just wondering now if the pattern can be etched onto a dogtag or similar and still be read or if it needs to be black and white. There could be so many uses for these within the BDSM scene, especially for the lazy like me who hate typing out mobile phone numbers or email addresses.

ETA: you can play with them at http://mobilecodes.nokia.com/create.jsp?terms=ac...

You issued the call to arms and I have come to your aid.

The barcode type is known as QR Code. It is one of the 2D barcode types that are starting to become common. Marks and Spencers are about to start using 2D barcodes on all their packaging and Samsung sell a microwave that reads the barcode on the packaging of the food you bung in it and cook it accordingly.

They won't scan from a dog tag, or skin, unless the barcode bits have very little red in them and the background has lots of red. Black has zero red and white is fully saturated red. Scanners only detect levels of red light.

Because mobile phones take a picture, rather than scanning, then interpret the photo for the barcode, there is a chance it may work from a screen. A normal barcode scanner won't read barcodes from a screen. One way to tell is by taking a piccy of the sample QR Code on the wikipedia page and see if it interprets.

A big thanks to Bohnanza.

It looks like you'd need to use a technique like enamelling on a dogtag to get the code to read.

I have 5 on my phone with various details in them, they can be read from an LCD screen, I couldn't say about a CRT. I downloaded them to my pc and transferred the files to my phone, they come up on a black background in the picture viewer.
