Fire and wind.
The Friday before last I was not well at all, I felt really yucky, and had a nasty headache. Accordingly, I phoned my boss and let him know I was not going to work, and put myself in the armchair by the old gas fire wrapped up in my sleeping bag.
After three hours dozing, I was in a good sweat, but my head was getting worse, drinking did not seem to help, but I was dozing so it did not really matter. Then the beeper went off on the microwave, but it did not stop after three beeps. Finally, I climbed out of my armchair and went into the kitchen, I was right; there was nothing in the microwave. Puzzled I returned to the living room where the beep was deafening.
Befuddled I tottered to the armchair, and finally the penny dropped, it was the Carbon monOxide alarm! I congratulated myself and sat in the armchair wondering why it did not stop beeping. After about five minutes I realised I had to DO SOMETHING but what? I had trouble finding the big red button, it seemed to have shrunk, and I could not focus on it properly. I tried pushing the reset button several times, but it immediately began beeping again,
Eventually I did turn off the gas fire and open all the doors and windows, and my head cleared quite quickly as soon as I went to the bathroom for a few minutes. After wandering around the rest of the house and garden for a while, I felt much more awake, and very glad I bought the alarm three weeks ago.
A salutary lesson for me to get the fire properly serviced, which I shall in the near future as soon as I can contact the gas man.

God thats terrible. I had the same problem a few years ago, the only way I knew something was wrong was because my cat was sitting by the fire coughing. I checked the detector and it was leaking. Hope you get it sorted.

Very scary and very relieved to know you're safe and well now. A lesson to be learnt indeed. A very good friend of mine had a close shave with gas a few weeks back. She'd gone to work leaving her gas ring on but with no flame. She returned from work and fortunately smelt the gas before switching the light on. Turned gas off and opened windows etc. She too was very lucky, as were the other residents in the block of flats where she lives.

It just proves how invaluble carbon monoxide alarms can be. Thank goodness you had one. It's made me think seriously about getting one too now. I'm glad you're ok. t x "I'm not Bi.....but I'm not straight.....I'm just a bit wonky really!"
