Sometimes they're nice, sometimes less so.
Taken from the name of a song, although it's quite probably a 'known phrase' anyway, the 4am Conversation is usually one of those nice long ones. The kind you share with a partner or close friend, where the night just drifts away in shared discussion about life, the universe and everything, and you suddenly find yourself wondering how it got quite so late; often accompanied by worry over having to get up so early the day later!
Last night, the conversation was less good.
I had an early-ish night, since I've got a presentation to give today and a sore throat I want(ed) to get rid of. So, sleeping away quite happily, when the wonderful joy of being woken by the fire alarm happened. Everyone trudged outside, mostly half asleep. Some little bits of chatter, mostly about how annoying and inconvenient this was.
The security team appears, goes in to check things out (as an aside, I wonder what they'd do if they were 'checking things out' and came across a raging inferno). 5 minutes later they come back out, and let us know that it was set off by someone smoking, which as we should know, is banned inside the halls. So rather than being caused by someone making mistake with their cooking, which while annoying is easily forgivable, it was caused by someone being a selfish, lazy arse.
People have been encouraged to come forward 'if they know anything'. Seems a bit pointless, since the little fire display console screen shows the exact room the alarm was tripped from, so they know who it's likely to have been. Here's hoping it doesn't happen again anytime soon anyway.
Admittedly it was closer to 2:30 than 4am in reality, but the point still stands. ![]()

its crap when your getting no sleep for all the wrong reasons.
That said i am rather enjoying my current 2am conversations tucking me into bed - i will sleep when i am dead I'd rather bleed with cuts of love then live without any scars... |
