Getting Stuck (3)

skyfox's profile

Posted by skyfox on Fri 28 Sep 07, 2:14 PM to skyfox's blog.

I left my hometown because I knew that if I didn't, I would never leave. And I didn't want that. I left my past profession and got a postgraduate degree because I knew I didn't want to do that job for the rest of my life. Now I'm unemployed, with the benefit of an expensive degree. I need a job, simply because I need to work. But I don't want to get stuck in a crappy job for the rest of my life. I've been avoiding that all my life so far, getting stuck.

But don't all people get stuck in one way or another? Movement, movement, movement, action, action, action, growth, growth, growth. Lots of people don't have it, but I want it. Do I need it? I suppose. But if I continually search for "the perfect job" or even "the perfect career", am I not likely to be disappointed? My friend's father once said, "do what you love and the money will follow". So what is it?

Those who read my profile will find a list of things I like. Sure, some of those things (ropes, leather, being beaten until I cry, and things of that nature) are not job-related things. But I'm sure some are.

I now have a choice. I can choose what kind of job/career I can get stuck in. Everyone gets stuck eventually, its just a question of when and where. But, dammit, I'm going to make this choice mine.

If you continually search for the perfect job or career, you can end up not doing anything at all, and then finding yourself too old to be wanted for your 'perfect job'.

Start with something that will lead in the direction you want to go, you can always move on.

i actually do think its true to do what you love and the rest will follow, that isnt to say that there will not be times you 'feel stuck' because there will be but if you can find something that you can get up on a monday morning with a feeling of 'brightness' and finish the week with a sense of 'job well done' you won't go far wrong.

My Mother always told me it's easier to get a job while you are in a job. Doesn't always ring true I guess but I can see the logic in it. So the moral of the story is to get a job doing the first thing that comes up and then continue to move up the ladder as time goes on. I have always said I would shovel shit if I had to because we all need money to live and like the old saying goes, beggars can't be choosers.

All the best, Chris
