The Leeds Munch recently started a series of regular demos and workshops, not held as part of the munch itself, but in the same venue later the same day. Yesterday, it was the third in the series, on rope bondage, performed by the genial Eric Stanton of this parish.
A lot of you already know him, and know that he's a quiet man, but with the ability to easily capture a room's attention, even a room of noisy perverts. The demo was to be exactly two hours long, but when you're tying someone up the time just flashes past; and with time allowed at the end for the audience to borrow some rope and try things out for themselves, the demo seemed to be over very quickly. Eric demonstrated five different ties in that time, from simple to complex. Although I'd seen all of them, I think, done by other people at various times and places, it was still a joy to watch. None of the common rope bondage ties are set in stone, everyone ties them differently, and Eric put in some useful tips as he was going; "you could do this instead of that", or "a lot of people do this like this, but it's more adaptable if you do..." And, of course, a lot of it was new to many people in the audience.
There's always something new to learn, too - did you know that the karada is often used for mountain and cave rescue? And tips to pick up, such as keeping a clockwork torch in your kit bag so you can find things inside it quicker. Eric is very safety-conscious, and is well-known for doing suspension ropework; and repeated the point that for safety, you need to know how strong your rope is. There wasn't any suspension at the demo,* partly as there was nowhere to suspend anybody from; but it was mentioned in discussion.
As I was there on my own, I didn't take much part in the workshop part of the session besides sitting and watching everybody beavering away trying to produce their own bondage work. Which was a lot of fun too, in its own way; but that's for a separate post. All in all, it was a very good demo, and I'm sure it could have been much longer and still held people's rapt attention. Now I'm just waiting to see what the next Leeds Munch demo is going to be. Earlier, at the munch proper, the organisers were asking for suggestions for next year's demo topics; so it looks like they'll have some interesting things in the pipeline.
* actually, that's a slight white lie - there was, very briefly! "With a well-tied hog tie, you can do this" - and he picked the demo assistant up by her ropes.

You could see the reluctance on his face "Now we're photogenic, you know we don't stand a chance"

A big thank you from the munch management for all those who attended and a special thanks to Eric for giving up his time to come along and pass on his knowledge. Lots of positive feedback from the night, and hope all who attended whether new to rope work or an old hand at it got something from the evening. Id rather live life on the edge, than live on the edge of life.

Thanks to you lot as well. I enjoyed myself.
Happy to do it again anytime - just tell me where and when By the way - the 'Tyrolean Basket' which is similar to the 'Karada' was used mainly by alpine climbers to bring down bodies from high frozen peaks. I suppose that is a form of rescue. I have used it in cave rescue but only because no other means was available.
I'm glad you got a pic of ros - lets be knowing when it appears . Edited 23 Sep 07, 8:15 PM by EricStanton
